I'm so pleased to have this piece appear in @PitheadChapel. After the heartbreak of missing the chance to attend and share memories at my father-in-law's funeral, it's a balm to get to honor him by sharing this story. pitheadchapel.com/red-hat/
“But maybe he wasn’t looking back at all. Maybe time bent and undulated around him, like the flight of a woodpecker, and he gazed momentarily into his future—into an extension of the natural world he knew so well.” @debwerrlein in @PitheadChapel pitheadchapel.com/red-hat/

What an exquisite piece on grief from @debwerrlein!
"been working to accept change, waiting for the day when my husband and I can move away without looking back so we won’t see the bulldozers come for the three-bedroom brick rambler where we raised our kids" @debwerrlein from “Shed Fall” losangelesreview.org/shed-fall-by-d… #LARnonfiction
"Creativity that comes from our most courageous authentic heart opens us to the flow—an unseen river of images, insights, and visions, where we connect across time with all that has ever lived." ~Mona Susan Power, who made it look so easy in The Council of Dolls.
Check out this spot-on & hilarious essay up @Brevitymag about how our social media obsession shapes our experience of the world. Thanks to @DemistyB for bringing it to my attention over at the Blue place. brevitymag.com/current-issue/…
Just finished Council of Dolls, by #MonaSusanPower. Mesmerizing powerful novel about how love can flow forward and backward, healing past wounds. The audio was beautiful but I wish I'd read it on paper so I could have lingered longer over the gorgeous language #amreading #lit
#Binders, is anyone over at the Blue place, as in the Cielo Azul? I searched for binders to find other writers and literally came up with a bunch of posts about the 3-ring variety & other clasp-type objects 😂 I'm DebWerrlein over there if you want to find me.
Seems a lot of folks are trying out this blue place, but you need a code to join. Anyone have one to spare? #writingcommunity
So I make myself a cheat sheet at the beginning of every year with the names of all of my students with IEPs and what their basic accommodations are. It takes about an hour to make the sheet and less than a minute to consult it when I need it.
"Jawn," "decision fatigue" and “nepo baby” are among the over 500 new words and phrases added to the latest version of Dictionary.com, the site announced Wednesday.
In flash the meditative comes after the end, after we’ve been presented with all of the evidence of the story, when our inferences and judgments accumulated, and all of the implications by the writer have been processed by the reader. #flashwritingtips
Thank you @LAReview for sharing my work!

I absolutely agree. Time away from academe became time to think for me. But the loss of academic community meant less inspiration for what to think about, so it's complicated.
I say it's largely a myth that academic jobs offer greater intellectual or time "freedom" compared to jobs outside the academy, all things considered. A myth that keeps PhDs from truly exploring their options and sometimes stuck in shitty situations. What say you all?
I just finished Breaking Into the Backcountry by @The_Big_Quiet. Loved it. If you're seeking solitude in the quiet of nature but can't get away, Edwards will take you there. nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison/97808032…
Even those of us who aren't geologists do this!
All geologists keep rocks in their car console, right? ⚒️🪨
An element of academia which continues to floor me is that three people in a department can teach the same amount of classes, but one person makes 100k+, another makes 45k, and another makes 18k...and students have zero awareness of this difference.
