This was one of the of most insane monopolization schemes I've ever uncovered: Two secretive European companies rolled up every alternative supplier of egg-laying hens to American egg producers between 2010 and 2021—and have spent the past three years cashing in: raising hen…
And now comes part two of the BIG investigative series by @musharbash_b on egg market consolidation. This part is on the two creepy European firms who are the barons of chicken genetics. And yes, private equity is involved in hiking your egg prices. thebignewsletter.com/p/fowl-play-ho…
Can't even describe how much I hate what AI has done to the process of grading student work. I hate finding it, I hate the paranoia it fosters, I hate the confrontations with students who have used it. Nothing else in my experience has ever changed my job this much for the worse
This is just false. Eggs are cheap and plentiful in most of the world *without* resort to the extreme factory farming the U.S. egg industry has adopted. Talking heads who know nothing about agriculture should just sit this one out.
To lower prices, 99% of eggs are factory farmed. But packing many birds into a small space allows disease to easily spread and even cross into humans. Cheap eggs are a trade-off and one of the trade-offs is disease-caused supply shocks. Happy to answer other questions!!
These trends of unsustainable crop prices and farm input costs that automatically go up and down with crop prices so you can never make any money —they’re presented to farmers as just facts of life, when they’re absolutely not. Life wasn’t like this until we stopped enforcing the…
Our 1st year farming was 2010. At least this validates our feelings of suffocation and helplessness, especially since we started from scratch.
American food monopolies are killing our ability to feed ourselves. We are now a massive net food importer.
Trump has chosen grifters to lead the FBI. Kash Patel sells "K$SH" branded merch, vaccine reversal pills. Dan Bongino's entire show is telling listeners the world is ending so they buy the dozens of survivalist products he sells. I know this feels like a bad dream. It isn't.
It's time to call it. AI is built on a house of cards of intellectual property violations starting with Facebook which is starting to look a lot like a crime scene as held back discovery documents begin to be compelled and unsealed in court. /1
The Trump admin appears poised to double down on one of Washington’s most entrenched orthodoxies: value-based payment (VBP) and its ideology of managed care. @Andy_Ryan_dydx and I argue this is a mistake. It’s time for a new agenda in Medicare. 1/x
All Elon is doing is torching the infrastructure that makes america the world leader in biomedial research. And he's not doing the economy any favors either, the negative effects of this are going to reverberate through biotech, pharma and the rest of the economy 5/N
Japanese scientists have created a hydrogel that reverts cancer cells back to cancer stem cells in 24 hours
Seems that the hundreds of billions US tech monopolistic oligarchs have extracted from taxpayers hasn’t benefitted US hegemony - not in AI, not in social media, not in e-commerce & not in science. Maybe anti-trust laws & supporting competition would make sense.

I set up a questionnaire to find out what government and government-adjacent workers think of DOGE. Lots of interesting responses. Mostly it's 'there's waste but they are firing the competent people.' If you work in or around government, fill it out! docs.google.com/forms/d/1wj0yL…
Firings at FDA include cuts to inspectors and medical product reviewers. Deep concern about impacts to the medical device center. Overall, nearly 700 probationary employees appear impacted at the agency. w/ @adamcancryn + @meganmesserly + more: politico.com/news/2025/02/1…
After @DropSiteNews revealed Tesla was forecast to be given a $400 million contract for “Armored Tesla,” the State Department altered its spreadsheet to obscure Tesla’s role. Metadata shows the spreadsheet was revised several hours after our story published.
A damaging story from @DropSiteNews today claims Tesla got a $400M State Dept. contract. But when I checked, the spreadsheet says "Armored Car Services," not "Armored Tesla." 🧐 Begs the question: has there been a cover-up or just a previous misclassification now corrected? 🤨
And for this, we are restarting coal-fired power plants and driving up energy bills for regular consumers across the country.
Elon Musk wants to strip out payments for the indirect costs of doing vital medical research for the federal govt — while SpaceX gets to keep its undisclosed indirect rate, which is paying out billions.
In just the week before Trump took power, CFPB: - ordered Equifax to pay $15M - ordered a major auto lender to return $10M to customers - ordered CashApp to refund $120M to customers - sued Capital One for cheating people out of interest payments This week it's closed.
NEW: CFPB employees were just abruptly informed that the watchdog agency's DC headquarters will be closed this week. The email, obtained by @CNN, did not explain a reason for the sudden closure. This comes days after Elon Musk tweeted out: “CFPB RIP” with a tombstone emoji.
We desperately need smart deregulation on housing & infrastructure so we can build more energy, homes, trains etc for lower cost. Instead we’re getting dereg of crypto and fintech that will ruin the lives of ordinary people at best and cause another financial meltdown at worst.
Historical perspective: FDR’s New Deal was largely about creating the foundations necessary to protect American society from collapsing into authoritarianism and fascism. Our leaders, from both parties, have spent the last 50 years dismantling those protections. And here we are.
I don’t think a lot of people appreciate how much of their overall lifestyle and relative certainty is backstopped by a steady, boring stability of systems they don’t understand or even realize exist.
