Prefrontal cortex atrophy may cause blunted emotional responses. We can become more aggressive, irritable & struggle to initiate activities. We perform poorly on tasks that require longterm planning and impulse inhibition.
Amygdala hypertrophy/enlargement is related to behavioral disorders such as depression. Heard of fight-or-flight? Modern world events can cause the amygdala to respond as if there were a physical threat. There is no "bear" chasing us, though our body still reacts like there is.
Hippocampal atrophy/shrinkage damages cognitive functions & interferes with the process of creating memories. This has a profound impact on both behavior & the ability to form a stable, realistic & cohesive sense of self. It also is an early marker of Alzheimer's disease!!!
Feeling out-of-it, more exhausted, & just not yourself? Longterm stress can damage your brain & body. The brain’s prefrontal cortex is key for focused attention & executive function. It impacts how we plan, organize, solve problems, use flexible thinking & control our impulses.
Reminder: RTI is not a service. Kids don’t “test into RTI” & then “get RTI” from an “RTI teacher.” If we are using the term this way, we missed the boat. RTI is an overarching approach to instruction & the most important “RTI tchr” is the gen ed tchr delivering core instruction.
