Engineer George de Mestral was hiking & noticed little burrs sticking to both his pants & dog. He saw the burrs had small hooks that would cling to anything that was loop-shaped. Mestral recognized the potential for a new fastener – now known as Velcro! #12DaysOfInventions
Wilson Greatbatch grabbed the wrong resistor out of a box while trying to build an oscillator to record the heartbeat sounds of animals. When he turned it on, it produced a signal that mimicked the human heartbeat. Thus, the implantable pacemaker was created! #12DaysOfInventions
During World War II, chemist Harry Coover tried creating a suitable plastic for gun sights. Instead, he accidentally made cyanoacrylate, now known as superglue. He realized its potential later when trying to create heat-resistant polymers for jet planes. #12DaysOfInventions
In 1903, chemist Edouard Benedictus dropped a glass flask. It shattered, but didn't fall apart! He discovered the flask had been filled with cellulose nitrate, providing a protective layer. Today, safety glass uses a similar solution to cellulose nitrate. #12DaysOfInventions

Scientist Wilhelm Roentgen tried to create lightbulbs by using cathode-ray tubes but noticed they continued to emit light when placed inside a cardboard box. They also passed invisible rays that could penetrate solid matter. Soon after, x-rays were invented! #12DaysOfInventions
You really can create life-changing accidents in the lab! #12DaysOfInventions Chemist Spencer Silver failed to make heavy-duty adhesive for the aerospace industry. Instead, he accidentally invented a temporary adhesive used to create removable notes, now known as Post-it notes.
Sometimes it's okay to get upset in the kitchen. #12DaysOfInventions Thanks to a New York restaurant customer complaining about the fried potatoes being too soggy and thick, Chef George Crum got so upset that he accidentally created what is now known as the potato chip!
Another engineering experiment turned into an accidental invention! Engineer Percy Spencer was experimenting with a radar-related vacuum tube when the candy bar in his pocket started to melt. Using his newfound knowledge, he later patented the microwave! #12DaysOfInventions
The kitchen is a wonderful place to experiment! 🍪 That's what Ruth Wakefield did when she tried making chocolate cookies. She chopped up a block of semi-sweet chocolate, hoping it would melt and spread out. Instead, she created chocolate chip cookies! #12DaysOfInventions
