If the US would just join the rest of the world and tax based on residence rather than citizenship, then Americans would be able to keep their citizenship AND live a normal financial life in their new home countries.
And many innocent and unsuspecting US persons w. foreign pension plans and retirement schemes may be swept up in this wave of "noncompliance" since these may be treated as "foreign trusts". Nightmare.....
The life of a US citizen is nothing but a series of forms. It's just that some forms carry a greater threat of penalties than others ...

The #FATCA of the matter is that Americans abroad (including Accidental Americans) are not treated the same as Americans living in America. We cannot save for retirement, invest in the economy, start businesses, or buy or sell homes, for example. Why are there two sets of rules?
