if you hold uncommon and/or low-status moral views, one of the strangest things you'll encounter regularly in one-on-one conversations is people taking cheap memey potshots at you and then looking to a non-existent audience for applause
this question was put to students in a second year graduate ML econometrics course by pat bajari (RIP) about 14 years ago and i'm still not sure how i feel about it
To me, all of the heated debate yesterday was not really about econometrics/statistics. Rather, it seems like it's really about whether we want to redefine "economic theory" in a world in which predictive models have increasingly impressive abilities to extrapolate/generalize.
