The Dutch invest €500M—€30 per capita—per year in cycling. What is the return? Over 1,000 km and 60 hours of cycling per capita per year; preventing 6,500 deaths and €19B in healthcare. Don’t ask whether you can afford to invest in cycling. Ask whether you can afford not to.
From Bergen to Eindhoven and Atlanta to Calgary, cities are putting themselves on the map cycling infrastructure. The humble bicycle can play a central role in attracting new employers, talent, and tourists; while giving residents a new pride of place. service-studievereniging.nl/magazine/artik…
Two brothers, ages 10 and 6, bike home independently at the end of their school day on this 50-year-old separated cycling infrastructure in a Rotterdam 🇳🇱 suburb, just like many generations before them. 🧵1/3
The cherry on top: This converted rail tunnel about a mile down the bike path from Fyllingsdalstunnelen. Some Bergen cyclists say it’s their favorite.
Exiting Bergen, Norway's Fyllingsdalstunnelen, a new 3-km tunnel built through a mountain -- and only open to those walking, biking, or scooting. My bucket list is now one item shorter.
The Fyllingsdalstunnelen is part of a larger transformational project: an 8km “green spine” connecting the southern suburbs to Bergen Station. It includes a cycle- and (grass) tramway, parks and rainwater retention sites; all to be lined with new development in the coming years.
In April 2023, Bergen opened the world’s longest purpose-built pedestrian and cycling tunnel: the 3,000-metre Fyllingsdalstunnelen. Blasted through the base of the 477-metre tall Løvstakken Mountain, the €27-million project directly links the Fyllingsdalen and Mindemyren areas.
Took a few photos in Amsterdam this weekend. 🧵 Teenagers laughing this hard is a sign young people feel safe. /1
The more people that choose to walk, bike and take public transit to get around, the better cities work for EVERYONE, including DRIVERS. Anyone still claiming this is a “war on the car” doesn’t understand how cities work. HT @fietsprofessor for graphic.
Cities across the North Sea Region rely on unsustainable, private car-centric #urbanmobility systems. The resulting air & noise #pollution leads to premature deaths, cardiovascular diseases and mental health issues.

A global study reveals that Dutch residents are the most physically active on earth, getting 12.8 hours of exercise each week. The key—designing activity into daily life. The average #Dutch person cycles about 1,098 kilometers per year. HT @Cycling_Embassy ipsos.com/en/global-view…

1. Welcome to Toronto, where apparently you should now wave a flag if you hope to cross the street safely. At a signalized intersection. By a school.
Over 40% of Europe’s population lives in areas where noise levels exceed the 55 dB sound limit recommended by the WHO. But in Dutch cities like The Hague—where the majority of traffic is human-powered—the streets are alive with the sounds of children playing and birds chirping.
Here’s what civilised roads look like, happening just a couple of hundred miles from here. Right now
