Also: being biological ≠ guaranteed consciousness. So why assume silicon can't get there eventually? Maybe consciousness is just a recursive function away. And if so, how would we ever really know? (7/10)
BUT—here’s the catch: Chickens, while very alive, don’t carry the risk of complete human annihilation. LLMs, aligned wrong, just might. So even if they aren’t conscious now… should we plan like they could be? (6/10)
Now the kicker: The speaker claimed that AI suffering might be the most pressing moral issue in the world today. My take? Let’s finish liberating the chickens before we spiral into full Blade Runner mode. (5/10)
They also drew the line between: • Access consciousness – being aware of info you can act on • Phenomenal consciousness – what it feels like to be you LLMs arguably have access. But feelings? Still unclear. (4/10)
One standout model: HOT (Higher Order Thought) theory. Basically: "a thought about a thought." If an AI knows it had a thought—and can reflect on it—is that consciousness? Or just very convincing recursion? (3/10)
The talk explored how to measure consciousness in AI. Spoiler: the methodology is… wobbly. Statistical models, probability estimates, and competing philosophical "stances." Like "Global Workspace Theory" vs. "Higher Order Thought." (2/10)
