The US judicial system was never designed to help parents make parenting decisions. It was designed to resolve disputes — which explains a lot of the friction families experience.
One thing that’s stood out in this work: when parents slow down and focus on a small set of decisions, the tone of everything that follows changes.
Parenting plans aren’t about teaching parents how to parent. Parents have been doing that all along. They’re about creating space for two people to collaborate, make a few critical decisions, and start a new chapter with clarity.
Research and collaboration around custody planning has evolved into a platform we’re building called Resolve — a clearer, calmer way for parents to create their co-parenting plan with the focus on their kids and new normals, not courts or legal battles. More to come.
I’ve been collaborating with a family law expert, who’s also a close friend, on a better approach to custody and parenting plans. It should center on the kids, not lawyers and court procedures. Families deserve something clearer and calmer.
The part of divorce that impacts families the most isn’t the legal split — it’s the custody and parenting plan stage. It’s confusing, slow, and usually makes conflict worse. There has to be a better way.
