My MMA fandom grew out of a lifelong martial arts obsession. I ripped a UFC ad out of a magazine in like 1994 and hung it on my wall--hooked on the sport before I'd even seen it. I will always have a soft spot for the true martial artist archetype (Jiri, Machida, Wonderboy, etc.)
