I believe that appraisals like this come about when there is open discussion. It not only helps us arrive at a better solution, but ensures that we all own the solutions that have emerged from this debate over possibilities.
That’s what a thriving democracy should have—not bluster and noise and entrenched political positions, like we see in some democracies, but an honest appraisal of the costs and benefits of policies that shape the sort of society and country we would all like to live in.
At our political debate last night, I emphasized that the #workersparty, as a responsible and loyal opposition, is not in the business of objecting to government policy for objections’ sake, but we do so to arrive at better outcomes for all Singaporeans.
