I'm often told suicide rates are spiking because of the emptiness of modern life. This is utterly wrong. Globally, suicide is in decline. It's higher in rural than urban areas. In the US (always an outlier among W democs) it's crept up from a low in '99. sciencemag.org/news/2019/08/g…
This is — and I cannot stress this enough — a page out of my book
As a guy who works for a local govt with an unsecured (internal) login for our learning management system, this is both unsurprising and frustrating. arstechnica.com/information-te…

Ransomware strike takes down 23 Texas local government agencies
Data rustlers hit Texas local agencies in a coordinated ransomware strike.
BREAKING: The Department of Labor just proposed a rule that aims to let government contractors fire workers who are LGBTQ, or who are pregnant and unmarried, based on the employers’ religious views. This is taxpayer-funded discrimination in the name of religion. Period.
FBI Director Wray: "A majority of the domestic terrorism cases we've investigated are motivated by some version of what you might call white supremacist violence."
Hey all. It's August Primary voting season in Washington. Be sure to use pdc.wa.gov to see where every campaign, candidate, initiative, referendum, bond, levy, etc. got their money from.
Such a great demonstration of why we need to keep our soil covered!! 🌳🌲

How did a government attorney end up arguing that it was “safe and sanitary” for kids to sleep on concrete floors? @popehat breaks it down: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
#OTD in 1865, enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom by Union troops in Galveston Bay, TX—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Known as #Juneteenth, this day is widely celebrated as the end of chattel slavery in the U.S. #APeoplesJourney
"Though many of these actions are worth taking, a fixation on voluntary action alone takes the pressure off corporate polluters. In fact, one recent study suggests that emphasis on smaller personal actions can actually undermine support for substantive climate policies."

.@tedcruz if you’re serious about a clean bill, then I’m down. Let’s make a deal. If we can agree on a bill with no partisan snuck-in clauses, no poison pills, etc - just a straight, clean ban on members of Congress becoming paid lobbyists - then I’ll co-lead the bill with you.
Here’s something I don’t say often: on this point, I AGREE with @AOC Indeed, I have long called for a LIFETIME BAN on former Members of Congress becoming lobbyists. The Swamp would hate it, but perhaps a chance for some bipartisan cooperation?
