I think I know this practically off by heart and it still always sends a shiver down my spine. If you are too young to remember the 1980’s please watch and know how much strength, determination and leadership is required to come back from a moment like this.
#OTD 1985. Neil Kinnock takes on the Militant tendency in Bournemouth "You can’t play politics with people’s jobs and with people’s services and with their homes"
If only we'd had him in a Saints kit yesterday.
With the right to champion Corbynism comes the responsibility to accept its abject failure....
"You can be a historical re-enactment society or you can be the government of the UK - you don't get to be both...there should be shame coursing through the veins of the Labour leadership today" Ex-Labour Minister @D_G_Alexander tells @bbcmarkmardell bbc.in/2snPcDT
Lack of support for Labour correlated more with age than with gender or social class; the younger the voter, the more likely to vote Labour.
A truly stunning age divide: 57% of 18-24-year-olds voted Labour, only 18% of over-65s did.
Truly incredible - not a single Conservative is willing to take part. And it is not the first example, across all broadcasters, throughout the campaign. Has a party ever behaved like this in an election before?
On election eve, @afneil with a bumper hour long Christmas edition of the #andrewneilshow with guests Lord Heseltine @AndyMcDonaldMP @sianberry @benhabib6 - we invited the Conservatives to take part but no guest was available. #ge2019
Paul Mason on Newsnight saying Twitter should ban anonymous accounts. Hard to disagree. I know the arguments about people in sensitive jobs but they knew that when they took the job. Ban ‘em.
Probably the most profound paragraph about British politics you'll read throughout this whole sorry election campaign. By Robert Crampton in the Sunday Times thetimes.co.uk/article/why-do…
“Unlimited rice pudding, etc, etc.”
Greta parece un personaje de Neal Stephenson: una niña rara y celebre, famosa globalmente, que combate el apocalipsis climático haciendo marchar continentes y cruzando océanos en catamaran. Luego decís que el futuro no es ciencia ficción.
"unbearable personally and untenable professionally" - this seems to be what happens to honest officials in a dishonest administration bbc.co.uk/news/uk-506935…
“The intuitions from memoirs and even novels may be as illuminating as from systematic data: they tell us how individuals perceived and experienced the dramatic events in which they were protagonists and, in the end, it is their actions that determined the outcomes of crises.”
Difficult not to sympathise with the situation she, like other UK diplomats/ civil servants, have been put in. So searing a resignation statement from such a person would, in any other election, have a huge impact. I suspect that in the current climate it will hardly be reported.
"I am at a stage in life where I would prefer to do something more rewarding with my time, than peddle half-truths on behalf of a government I do not trust." Top British diplomat resigns over Brexit "dishonesty." amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/12/06…
