Even once you find work you love, perfectionism can drain the joy right out of it. But the flip side is also true! Even without changing jobs, you can feel free right away by focusing on joy over outcome.
For me it’s been less “what would you do if time and money were no object?” and more “what would you do if you didn’t care about looking dumb in public and failing your way to success sounded like fun?”
Sometimes we procrastinate to avoid testing the fantasy. Why risk failure when instead you can hold a perfect idea out in front of you until some future time when you'll automagically have the talent and confidence to pull it off?
The case for multitasking: I can listen to a meeting much more attentively when I'm renovating my house at the same time.
Sign of maturity: I will now probably return the tupperware containers you leave at my house. EVEN the fancy glass ones.
Sometimes things not working out can be the catalyst for the change you really need. Once you learn that, you have less fear of things not working out.
Some journeys are very long and winding, but you feel better as soon as you take the first step.
During the pandemic lockdown we had so many real, necessary limitations on our freedom. But now: Are you missing out on freedoms where all you need is your own permission to do what you really want?
Run the other direction when you hear someone say: If you want something done, give it to a busy person. The reward for good work is more work. Life's not all fun and games.
PSA & note to self: You can be enthusiastic + lighthearted + playful AND responsible + valued + insightful. (Or any other combo of qualities!)
The more I practice focused work the more I wonder: Maybe we think we don’t know what to do because we expect our brains to serve up answers as quickly as our smartphones do. It’s become uncomfortable to wait any longer or deal with uncertainty. But it’s a muscle we can rebuild!
@pdxlilly ever since you taught me about @CuteEmergency i have no life. thanks for nothing. sorry! that bit sounded like something you'd say
@pdxlilly I feel like we've already tweeted about how it's inhuman(e) to resist a burrito butt. @richardmiller back me up.
"I would say this is my heart and she would say I will make it fly but you must bring it back to me." @WritersAlmanac tinyurl.com/o745hbc
@pdxlilly I am so excited to try that Alain de Bottom trick! Ahahaha! Except wait. Maybe that's what everyone has been doing to me?
Just tried to hum a song to shazam which apparently agrees I can't carry a tune.
Sitting on the patio I can hear @jacques_pepin on my neighbors' tv and now I'm wondering why we're not friends (yet)!
