Lack of alternatives needs to be addressed. Thanks @catrionaotoole and @noelbaker1 for highlighting. ADMA (Amend) Bill before Dail again tomorrow evening but ahd exclusion for some people detained under MHA still remains. AHDs can help avoid need for coercion @rodericogorman

🚨 Important piece re human rights and mental health #HumanRightsDay

‘Discriminatory’ new law set to exclude people who experience extreme mental distress madinireland.com/2022/12/discri… via @Mad_In_Ireland

Thank you @JenniferHRos for highlighting this important human rights issue in Irish capacity/MH legislation. Hopefully @roinnslainte @dcediy @rodericogorman @MaryButlerTD will take action to change this in line with UN CRPD @UNHumanRights @SR_Disability @MichelleFunk3 @WHO

As @feemorr points out - any one of us at any time could experience a period of distress. Why are we excluding such people from human rights protections afforded to everyone else under the law? In a system that arbitrarily decides what is 'well' and 'unwell'. Now that's crazy.

Agree, have been excluded from many events because of this including organisations promoting human rights and representing PWDs. Accessibility means allowing PWDs who are immunocomprised to attend events safely on equal basis with others @MichelleFunk3 @dcediy @DonnellyStephen

#DisabilityInclusion means wearing masks. I don't care how accessible you make your event, if masks aren't mandatory many disabled people will be excluded.

If the 2022 Bill fails to remove the discriminatory provisions in the ADMC Act 2015 that prohibits persons subject to involuntary detention under the mental health Act - the governments commitment to the implementation of the UN Disability Convention must be called into question.

There continues to be discrimination and lack of equality in the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Amend Bill in regard to the enforceability of advance healthcare directives in mental health with no evidence to support decision @rodericogorman @frances_black @fintanwarfield

Thanks Helen,@rochfordbrennan Great to see you on @rtenews tonight re: new treatment for alzheimers

Thanks @feemorr @frances_black equal inclusion of AHD in Assistant Decision Making Capacity Act is crucial for people who experience mental distress #Stigma #UNCRPD #LEWBODYDEMENTIA #ALZHEIMER’S @DonnellyStephen leave no one behind

Well done to @JuliaMa69316136 and @deecurranology on all your hard work on this. Julia was in ATU for a guest lecture last week and really empowered everyone to speak up for their employment rights. Thank you Julia for being a brave & courageous advocate for workers in this area

Thank you @frances_black for tabling amends to Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amend) Bill in Seanad this evening. While amends were not carried, we will continue to fight for equality re AHDs in Mental Health Amend Bill. See article from today @MaryButlerTD @rodericogorman

A must read thread 🪡 particularly in the context of conversations online and in the media in the past few days. Human rights are universal and must be respected. Sad reality that we continue to have to fight for the basics when it comes to mental health.

The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Amendment Bill returns to Seanad for final debate tomorrow at 4.30pm. Despite huge efforts from activists and allies, Minister @rodericogorman is still refusing vital changes that would make it more human rights compliant.

Concerning attitudes in recent event by college of psych, simply defending the MHA rather reassessing responses to crisis. Is involuntary treatment really the only response to crisis? Can’t we do better? One panellist was very patronising towards service users ‘lacking insight’

Advanced Healthcare Directives should be extended to persons detained under section A & legally binding as they're in general medical services & people detained do not pose a safety risk to themselves or society & it does not automatically follow a detained person lacks capacity

I recently became aware that remarks I made at #wcac2022 were being cited as evidence that Ireland's Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act is fully compliant with Art. 12 CRPD. This is not the case. I have sent a letter to @rodericogorman to clarify my position.
