That’s why I wrote „largely ceremonial“. Not that I have statistics, but I’d assume that more than 90% of the job are spent shaking hands etc., not appointing new ministers (even for the tumultuous past years ;)
This is the ballot for the Austrian presidential election. Each ballot is placed in an envelope, thrown in a box, &taken out at 5pm, when the polling stations close. The votes are counted by a group of people representing different political parties, ensuring there’s no fraud.
What’s important is that this is a largely ceremonial role, and that it tells us little about where Austrians actually stand politically. Van der Bellen is expected to win, but his former party, the Greens, would do poorly if parliamentary elections were held today.
Here are the 7 candidates. One is a member of the far-right FPÖ, the rest don’t belong to any of the traditional parties. Most hold conservative, far-right views, oppose migration & pandemic restrictions. Another founded the „beer party“ to promote drinking (you guessed it)🍺
