On 9/11/21 David Lammy (as he then was) pressed Dominic Raab about precise plans for reducing the Crown Court backlog. It is nonsense to say that he did not know the extent of the problem. He was watching it like a hawk then, and at each of the subsequent quarterly MOJ updates.
Court delays have left complainants and defendants in limbo for too long, yes. There is not a shred of published evidence - not a scrap of paper - to show that removing juries from serious criminal trials will reduce delays. The @MoJGovUK have got nothing at all.
As the @victimscomm said on @channel4news last night, court delays have left victims in horrifying limbo for too long. Our reforms will reduce delays and speed up justice for victims.

It’s worth reading the judge’s remarks in this article. They were delivered before yesterday’s bombshell announcement. I doubt judges will feel as free today to praise the jury system, in case they are accused of expressing a political opinion. How sad that we are in this mess.
