Yep. As a working class writer, I spent 8 years writing scripts without support. Got nowhere. Then my partner paid my way for 3 years so I could write full time. Now I'm a profressional screenwriter. Seriously doubt I'd ever have got anywhere without the 'middle class' advantage.
THIS! Building on what David has said - writing scripts takes time. When there's nothing, or very little, available in terms of financial support then only those that can afford to write the scripts without commission can do so. We need financial stability to do what we do best.
