And while I agree that appreciating art as part of a broader landscape can be interesting, things like cultural and historical perspective can be provided without making a value judgement.
I’m not sure I agree with you there (on either point really). I disagree with the idea that anyone should be told how to consume or enjoy art – in many cases even the artist themselves wouldn’t be so prescriptive, so what qualifies a critic to be so?
No doubt we all need criticism to improve, but there’s a difference between critique from a peer or an audience that helps you better your art and someone being paid to criticise art for a living. The latter just feels surplus to requirements.
Put it this way. Critics could disappear from the earth tomorrow and we wouldn’t even notice. But a world without art? That’s a world few of us would want to live in.
