If I were in the chemical sales trade, I would be worried right now. Every year I am asked why we are using fewer inputs. More diverse rotations, better & more disease resistant varieties, better knowledge of when to plant, better equipment establishing more competitive crops,…

Canola after fallow, left, vs double cropped on the right. On the right was even planted later, which should mean it has more 💧 in the profile too. The best rain is the rain that has already fallen and been put in the bank 💧🏦

A comparison of double cropping and single crop yields on one farm over the past 12 seasons. When you draw a line of the break even yield required for each crop, two of them do not make sense when double cropped. I should add that this is highly specific to soil type and…

Wheat after lupins is chuffed. We hit the Ryegrass hard in the lupins but I am expecting the Conyza to be a challenge in the off-season. I really think a dense cover crop would do a lot of good after harvest.

I watched a Tempo plant this maize back in April when they were still getting frosts. Seriously accurate job. The CoV between seed placement with those planters is usually around 15% - I'm dying to see what a Speed tube planter can achieve.

I've said on so many occasions that choice of product at T1 has to consider Stem Rust, and that the supposition that the disease only comes into the crop around flowering is incorrect. Effects of using the wrong chemistry are very clear to see here much later on.

Absolutely bowled over by the differences in disease levels in the trace element plots. Much more Stem and Yellow Rust on the right in the 1st pic where only Cu applied, and Septoria on lower leaves in 2nd pic where only Silica applied.

Trip up through Mau Narok today. 1) this place grows epic Ryegrass, 2) Net Blotch in barley looks challenging, 3) wheat appsars to be planted at very high seed rates, 4) soil compaction, every way you look.

Highlights of last week: Canola that really hung in through the dry period. Barley that bounced back after a dry period. Sunflowers that have only had about 50mm GSR. Peas that would like it to stay dry now!!!
