There is a nasty and racialised side to the attacks on the Home Secretary @Jonathan_Hinder: Shabana Mahmood is battling identity politics – on left and right newstatesman.com/politics/labou…
Denial doesn’t protect minorities. Pretending problems don’t exist doesn’t make racism go away. All it does is push people towards darker forces willing to exploit their fears. So glad home sec refuses to look the other way, she is doing the serious work of fixing what’s broken.
Top work from the Home Secretary. The Greens are total hypocrites on this - asylum hotel NIMBYs
Look how angry the Green Party’s Carla Denyer is at the end of this video 😆
To those saying Labour are emulating Reforms policy. Really? Lab will still process claims, Reform won't. Lab will process claims onshore. Reform won't. Lab will stay in the ECHR, but reinterpret Arcticle 8. Reform will repeal it. Lab would not repeal HRA. Reform would.
These proposals are tough. No doubt about it. However there's nothing dignified about a refugee drowning in the Channel. An asylum system that opens up controlled safe routes whilst deterring unsafe crossings is not far right, it's the only sensible solution to this.
I know this country is an open, tolerant and generous place. But the public also rightly expect that we can control our borders. Unless we act, we risk losing popular consent for having an asylum system at all. While today’s measures will restore control to our borders, I…
We are not taking jewellery at the border.
The only thing I’m concerned about being “pissed up the wall” is how the Streeting–Mandelson faction has squandered a once in a generation Labour govt. Mandelson has more in common with millionaires, billionaires and corporations than with the people our party was created to…
A £24,000,000 mansion in London pays LESS property tax than a £240,000 pebble-dash semi in Lancashire. Council Tax is a joke. Let’s sort this out.
This is literally the bond markets being more powerful than the government. Parliament shouldn't self censor because the bond markets might get jittery, that isn't democracy.
"The welfare vote... completely changed those calculations... it adds money to the cost of borrowing". Guardian deputy political editor, Jessica Elgot, tells @mattchorley that Labour MPs are being told their words can affect the bond market #Newsnight
This is a profoundly stupid idea. We should be encouraging private pensions not penalising people for saving for the future. Back of the sofa economics.
🚨 NEW: Rachel Reeves will use the Budget to impose a £2k-a-year limit on how much salary can go into a pension before paying National Insurance The move will raise £2bn and hit salary sacrifice schemes [@thetimes]
Aaron has a point. A lot of the Labour right don’t seem to believe in anything from first principles. There’s no set of ideas and a follow through. It tends to be vibes, “I love the last Labour govt”, “but we need to win and we must win power”. That’s it. Where’s the ideas?
You might think its fine to stop these things! But this is the modus operandi of centrism now - just constantly stopping stuff. Its emotionally exhausting for the electorate and clearly doesn't lead to effective government. What are we stopping after Farage?
Please anyone considering voting for Zack Polanski look again at how he spreads misinformation about nuclear 💀
🚨 WATCH: David Lammy lists rapists accidentally released under the Tories as he hits back at Robert Jenrick "Was there an independent investigation? No!" "He comes here and has the brass neck - the brass neck - to give the impression this started 14 months ago"
I hate how modern left-wing politics (or so-called) is completely consumed by Israel and Gaza. The sheer amount of energy and obsession poured into it is absurd. They couldn’t care less about the conditions of the working-class in this country.
"The Greens believe that we can have diplomatic relations with Israel, and we think that is not okay." @zarahsultana breaks down the difference between Your Party and Zack Polanski's Greens. Watch the full interview, live now.
Barbara Castle explains why she is voting 'no' to Europe with an appeal to internationalism over 'Euro-jingosim’. From her speech at the Oxford Union before the 1975 European referendum.
Cameron and Osborne contracted the Chinese government to build a nuclear power station and our 5G mobile network. You were Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury in that government Priti, why didn’t you speak up then?
Labour has undermined Britain’s national security, because they are too weak to do anything other than appease China.
