Total installed solar capacity in the UK stands at ~19GW. Installed nuclear capacity is 5.9GW. Despite this, solar generated 14.8TWh in 2024, while nuclear generated ~40TWh. Clegg's short-sightedness in 2010 is not a valid argument for the expansion of solar capacity.
Slow return on investment is the exact reason Nick Clegg gave in 2010 against building nuclear power. He estimated they wouldn't be running until 2020/2021. Now I'm not a scientist but that probably would have been helpful during the energy spike/Ukraine headwinds era..

China hasn’t transitioned away from dense fuels. It has layered new ones on top of them. Its grid rests on coal, hydro, and nuclear. These are sources that deliver constant, controllable power. Wind and solar are additions, not replacements - frosting on a very dense cake.
