Wow! 6.19" of rain at my house just west of here since yesterday and still pouring at a 4"/hour rate.
I’ve covered several tropical systems over the years, including Alberto in 2018, but I’ve never seen Lake Tomahawk like this.

Challenge at work is to predict the first 90-degree day at Asheville, so I decided to make some plots of total occurrences and frequency. The avg first 90-degree day is June 23. Any guesses this year?

A lot of excitement for snow in the next couple of weeks across the southern Appalachians. The Smokies have hogged most of the snow so far this season, with much lesser amounts across the Piedmont.

Annually since 1951, on average, one named storm makes landfall in the Korean Peninsula, but there have been three so far this year. Newly formed TS #Maysak could be the fourth next week. If that occurs, it would tie the record number of landfalls.

Meanwhile in the West Pac, Bavi is becoming better organized. May become the 2nd super typhoon this season in the West Pac. JTWC track moves it toward the Korean Peninsula, where many locations have experienced devastating flooding due to 20-40 inches of rain in the last 30 days.

A lot of water has fallen this month across the Yangtze River Basin in China. Water being discharged from the Three Gorges Dam over the weekend is a bit concerning for downstream locations, including Yichang (pop. >4 million).

Think it was muggy earlier this week? A dew point of 90° F was observed at Jask, Iran late this afternoon, resulting in a heat index of 140° F. The region along the northern Persian Gulf/Gulf of Oman is usually one of the sultriest places in the world this time of year.

A weak tropical cyclone produced extreme rainfall totals over parts of Oman and Yemen since 27 May, resulting in deadly flash floods. Mirbat in the Dhofar province of Oman recorded 351 mm of rain from 27-31 May. These locations average 2-4 inches of rain per year.

Spring is dust season in Asia. MODIS captured a big dust storm in China's Taklamakan Desert caused by anomalously strong high pressure to the north of the Tarim Basin.
Gotten hooked on @throughlineNPR. I just wish history classes in school had been this interesting.
