all of this talk about the NLRB has got me thinking about the first affidavit I gave to a Board agent, containing this gem
Strikes are already underway in a year full of expiring contracts that could keep the strike wave rolling across the country. Support worker fights wherever you can. Fight the boss, build the union. From us alongside @labornotes and @joe_dmh
Automation is a significant threat to longshore workers globally, as port employers around the world have sought to bring in technology that would reduce their reliance on human labor—and undermine the strength of unions, @joe_dmh wrote: labornotes.org/2024/11/canadi…
Attached is a letter that was sent to Congressional leadership today regarding the ongoing rail labor negotiations:
Sick days? We don’t even get weekends. I worked with a new hire who won’t get a paid scheduled day off until next year. Rail carriers are forcing fewer workers to do more, faster. The result is unsafe working conditions which increase derailments and put communities at risk.
1/8 I want to share a few stories from this year that will call attention to the irreversible havoc rail carriers have placed on their employees, customers, and the nation. #railstrike
NEW: 17,000 train operators at railroad giant BNSF will get just 12 days off *per year* under a new policy. Workers at the company owned by Warren Buffett work 12-hour days and often operate trains alone. Outraged workers voted to strike but a Trump-appointed judge barred it.
Despite a mandated cooling off period, it appears rail carriers continue to engage in illegal concerted action. Freight railroad are stopping shipments in order to pressure congress into acting as the end of the cooling off period approaches Friday.
UPDATE: The nation's largest railroads have started to snarl the supply chain over a refusal to give workers sick leave. Rail unions called this "corporate terrorism." The railroad companies want workers to accept a contract with ZERO sick days.
DHL Teamsters in Rhode Island have been on strike since June 22. The company refuses to meet their demands for quality, affordable healthcare. On Friday, police attacked the picket line, pepper-spraying crowds that included the elderly and disabled. Absolutely shameful!
One of these individuals is being charged with simple assault… Now ask yourself, who looks like the aggressor here? We had a great show of solidarity yesterday on the line as dozens of Teamsters from multiple locals walked the line. Definitely no serve and protect yesterday
Largest private sector nurses strike in US history happening in Twin Cities and Duluth, MN. 15,000 members!#solidarity!
We talked to @labornotes @joe_dmh about being an effective union steward. youtu.be/Zbe1nUEi240
The BMWE, the third largest of the rail unions, has announced a tentative agreement with the national rail carriers. That leaves just two of the 13 rail unions (the biggest two, BLET and SMART) left to settle. Judging from Facebook comments, BMWE members aren’t happy about it.
ICYMI: .@labornotes published some great stories this week. If the algorithm hid them from you, here they are in a thread for your perusal. Happy early #LaborDay2022!
I keep hearing this from railroad workers, and it's wild - these are NOT jobs that people quit! Everyone I talk to says they've never seen anything like it before.
We are beyond pissed off. People with 15 years are quitting in droves.
I wrote an update in @labornotes about how the negotiations covering 115k rail workers are going (slowly) and how workers feel about them (pissed off) - courtesy of the survey put out by @railroadworkers
Railroad unions continue their slow creep along the path to a settlement—or strike—in contract negotiations covering 115,000 workers. labornotes.org/2022/09/rail-w…
More than 3,000 RR workers took part in a recent RWU Survey. Their thoughts on the PEB? - No way! On striking? Exercise that right. Overwhelming across all unions and crafts, age groups and seniority.conta.cc/3TFmKWj
