Friends, I wrote an essay on Alexis de Tocqueville, one of my favorite authors, and America’s loneliness problem. If you have a minute, give it a read! plough.com/en/topics/just… A big thank you to the editors at @Plough for helping me improve the piece!
Why Are We Lonely? Ironically, isolation is something many Americans have in common. Why do we feel so alone? Tocqueville has answers. @joeyhiles1 plough.com/en/topics/just…
Really helpful explanation here of the housing bill that just passed in the Senate
🚨🚨The Senate has passed the bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act as part of the NDAA! This is a historic level of bipartisan cooperation to expand Americans' access to housing. @aarmlovi, @AWJustus, and @rohanaras break down what's in this 310-page bill: ⬇️
It's a lot of fun when everything is working with the dissertation; I'm pulling books off the shelf, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Strauss, reading Frederick Jackson Turner for fun context, etc, the paragraphs are writing themselves. If only every day were like this
It seems insane to have George Santos in solitary confinement (even if for his “protection”); God will judge every single one of us who had a hand in building and sustaining our brutal, horrific prisons, prisons that should be the eternal shame of our nation
Former Republican Rep. George Santos, after spending 12 days in solitary confinement, is writing from jail calling for prison reform:
“What is it like to be a bat,” I recall as I am bombarded by Taylor Swift frenzy
One of the funnier exchanges I've ever seen on this website
Great piece here on the importance of free public events for families (and everyone else). This is how we escape the home-based Culture of Retreat. One of the things I love most about my small city is the constant stream of free concerts/festivals/movies put on in the town square
Communities should provide quality entertainment to encourage families who are often in the stage of life where they are the most financially stretched. @NadyaWilliams81
Meeting this morning, sat quietly for 29 minutes. My only contribution was identifying and riffing on client’s oblique reference to the book of Job. That’s what I call value added
Culture of Retreat
Recently in San Francisco I was getting a bagel at 8 am and a most of those waiting with me were Door Dashers. Imagine not leaving your apartment for a fresh bagel and paying someone to bring it to you instead. Sad!
The impulses on this sign are part of the reason why American household formation is falling, and a pro-family housing agenda has to recognize that favoring the status quo, particularly incumbent over new homeowners, will continue to make things worse
Culture of Retreat
Millennials aging out of the “local craft brew scene” and zoomers not being interested in it at all
me to wife : "I just began chapter 5 of my dissertation. It starts with me dragging the Declaration of Independence" wife : "you're done. I'm not reading it anymore"
My side hustle? You mean spending 7 years writing a book no one will read?
it’s the dostoyevsky in him
"I suffer at many tournaments, but here everyone suffers .. I'm happy about it." 🥵 Daniil Medvedev offering a unique perspective in Shanghai 🤣
Cleveland Guardians / Progressive Field is elite for this
More stadiums should build around the view of their city’s skyline.
Don’t know who needs to hear this but there’s no better cool points sacrifice than transition glasses. Having glasses that magically become sunglasses right when you need them is the stuff of miracles
Culture of Retreat. I am sympathetic to the critique of modern civilization outlined here—the obsession with scale and rationality, the replacement of the old with structures of planned obsolescence, of local cultures supplanted by global anti-culture, of the environment…
