For @thetimes's books of the year list, I've chosen eight titles in current affairs and politics. First up, The Hour of the Predator by @giulianode 'An unsettling, dreamlike series of vignettes and meditations on the upending of the international order'

“Defence is still kryptonite over here.” Fascinating read on Ireland's intriguing attitude towards defending itself ft.com/content/4748d3…
Thoughtful essay on Benedict Anderson by @arisroussinos. This paragraph in particular, on how technology has changed assimilation, has stayed with me unherd.com/2025/11/benedi…
Interesting piece. One implication of it is that older generations in particular may have to cede some of their privileges in order to protect the democratic system they cherish. Not much indication of that at the moment.

Curious that @Dauntbooks in Hampstead are selling a book on antisemitism by … the openly antisemitic David Miller
Rachel Reeves is not thrilled with Gordon Brown’s repeated interventions on the two child benefit cap From today’s @thetimes read
As the budget reaches its messy denouement, lots of frustration towards Torsten Bell (and his ally Minouche Shafik) from senior Whitehall figures From today's @thetimes read
This is a really serious story. West Midlands Police will absolutely need to explain how it ended up using misinformation and lies to justify its decisions, not least to concerned members of the Jewish community.
Law enforcement are supposed to make public order decisions on the basis of credible evidence. Whether you consider yourself pro-Palestine, pro-Israel or both, that is a reasonable expectation. Yet Netherlands police has told us the secret "intelligence" used by West Mid Police…
