Delighted to be giving a "France-Quebec Chair on Contemporary Issues in Freedom of Expression" talk at the University of Quebec at Montreal on the current crisis in free speech, democracy, and public media, on Dec. 2nd. actualites.uqam.ca/2025/la-libert…

It’s bleak because people are forgetting that they used to live differently. They may not like how things are, but they’re responding to and interpreting everything within the narrow terms that they’re given. And there is a great loss of imagination.

Delighted to have joined the History of Film podcast to discuss why public media matters. shows.acast.com/the-history-on…

One of genealogies of Media Studies is that many early methods began as advocacy strategies of 1940s media reform, to change broadcast regulation to allow for more educational channels. Put differently, Media Studies originated as a research movement to build US Public Media.

Thanks to Kathryn J. McGarr (Wisconsin) for this excellent and thorough review of my book on the origins of US public media, in "Reviews in American History." muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/article/…

Public media in America is absolutely vital to our understanding of the world and life itself and the Trump administration basically just tried to kill it. This is a historic legacy that can't be lost. We have to fight to save it! @joshshepperd @npr tropicsofmeta.com/2025/09/26/hel…

I am off teaching until at least August, 2026! And possibly longer. Time to write my memoir. Just kidding, going to write dry and depressing political economies of media to try to help address the world’s problems.

This is very good news.

Analysis of US college syllabi by the Open Syllabus project shows that bell hooks is assigned more than Aristotle, Judith Butler more than Plato, Edward Said more than than Kant, and Foucault more than everybody. (Thanks to Jon Shields for these comparisons.)…

Delighted to have interviewed with WBUR's Meghna Chakrabarti "On Point." First half discusses the historical intricacies of the US public media ecosystem. Second half I tried to detail how the GOP rescission bill was designed to attack democratic media. wbur.org/onpoint/2025/0…

Writing so that an argument is ordered in a specific way, and choosing one’s words so that they express an intended meaning, is a responsible way to conduct solid scholarship. Is it the most entertaining approach? Depends the audience.

Why do academics in the humanities read their papers aloud, word for word, when they give talks at universities or at meetings, while scientists generally speak extemporaneously? If you read, you might as well just hand out the paper. It's a mystery. whyevolutionistrue.com/2025/08/11/why…

I'm interviewed for this Nieman Lab report that discusses how rural areas will be affected by loss of local NPR reporting. We must not underestimate the import of equal access to information - we're about to witness an ideological shift in sense of "place."niemanreports.org/local-trusted-…
