Job numbers will freak markets, but wage growth has clearly slowed to non-inflationary pace, just 3.4 percent annual rate over last three months, slower than 2018-2019
Two of my kids started school today. Neither my 8yo nor my 11yo have teachers. They have substitutes. Why? Because who wants to do that most important, hard job in the world for such low pay?? We give subsidies in the form of tax breaks to tech companies, but we can’t…
Elon seems committed to degrading the user experience for everyone but annoying trolls on this website, so here's a quick guide to making your mentions more bearable from somebody who gets a lot of vicious harassment here: (1/4)
Could this be a first step toward a nationwide boycott of Starbucks > Cornell to End Partnership With Starbucks by June 2025 This comes after Starbucks closed all 3 unionized Starbucks in Ithaca. "Everyone was pretty unanimous that Starbux broke the law” cornellsun.com/2023/08/16/cor…
It is 👏against the law 👏 to prevent workers from discussing their wages. If you see something like this in your workplace, you need a union.
One huge point of concern: State and local govt jobs increased by only 8,000 in July, and there is still an enormous gap—they are down 244,000 since Feb ’20. Further, more than 90% of that gap—224,000—is in education. This is a disaster. 11/
This chart blows my mind. It shows the overall prime-age employment-to-population ratio. From the end of the Great Recession, it took 10 years, 4 months to regain the pre-recession prime age EPOP. This time around, it took 2 years and 11 months. The difference is staggering. 9/

2 of the biggest national minimum wage changes in the last 10 years were Germany & UK. Germany introduced a MW for the 1st time; UK did a major hike. By far, most evidence from both of these natural experiments suggest they successfully raised low wages without sizable job loss.
Average real (inflation-adjusted) wages for Production/Non-Supervisory workers (>80% of US private sector workers) are 2.7% above Jan 2020 levels, and are at pre-pandemic trend. Average for all workers is ~1% above Jan 2020 levels, but below trend. Shows wage compression.
Dr. Bill Spriggs will be greatly missed. If you didn’t get the chance to attend his memorial in person please find the recording below. #EconTwitter #BillSpriggs youtu.be/D_J-G-Wv-dY

Economists David Autor, Arindrajit Dube and Annie McGrew estimate low-wage workers’ ability to switch into higher-paying jobs has unwound one-quarter of the wage inequality between top & bottom earners that built up in the four decades before the pandemic. wsj.com/articles/the-r…
A fascinating and little-known fact about U.S. history🇺🇸: The U.S.once relied heavily on a tax system, strikingly similar to a wealth tax, that played a key role in fueling its growth and development. A thread diving into the intriguing history of the General Property Tax.🧵
4) The Conservative Nanny State - @DeanBaker13 Baker does a great job of explaining how the way markets are structured can promote or reduce inequality. Work covers: occupational licencing, patents, taxation and parents. Baker also puts it up free online which is great.
New Paper Alert 🚨 We estimate the returns to IRS tax audits across the income distribution. We find $1 of IRS spending on audits of top earners delivers more than $12 of tax revenue. Along the way, we provide new evidence of the strong specific deterrence effects of audits. 1/:

Binyamin Appelbaum's piece did an excellent job highlighting the real issues nytimes.com/2023/06/10/opi… Surely, we could have made clean energy cheaper without the protectionist provisions, but we will get nowhere if we don't have political support for the transition.
