It may have taken many years to finish the design and engineering work for this in between so much other work, but we finally got it done!

Gentium Plus 6 adds three new bolder weights (plus italics) to the full character set. Many other improvements too! New features, better Windows screen rendering, WOFF2, and more. Fully free and open project. software.sil.org/gentium/releas…

A great project from people who know what they're talking about and are still eager to learn more.

Dear Letter/Language/Script-Research interested Twitter People, Here is some Devanagari research we are working on: motaitalic.github.io/devanagari-doc… Hope it helps, and hope we can talk with you more about it!

No formal graduation ceremony until the summer (if ever), but my PhD from Reading is official as of today! Thanks to everyone who encouraged and enabled my research.

My intro talk on the italic design process, prepared for ATypI, is now available to everyone. Five years of research compressed into 20 mins. 279 page version coming out in two weeks. gaultney.org/jvgtype/italic…

In this year of divisions between nations, communities, friends, and even families, my prayer is that those divisions would cease. Despite the rough circumstances of Christmas this year, may this season fill us all with unexpected hope, and bring reconciliation and kindness.

A lovely winter greeting from our choir. Peace to you!

We may not be able to sing to you in person yet, but we are still able to meet in v large and draughty churches. Wishing you and yours all the best..youtu.be/9LymFGopFbk

Spoilers: History is inescapable. Calligraphy is all-important. Calligraphy is irrelevant. Morison was wrong, but he was also right. Ten common techniques. And what about non-Latin 'italics'? (not much time for that last one, but I'll float some ideas)

I'll be sharing a brief summary of the results of my long research project on the italic design process. Come and hear how designers of the past and present have approached the design of that important companion face.

A solid and robust extended Latin design - and open source, too! Nicely done.

Glad to see a few months of collaboration with the FontForge developers result in reasonably good support for modifying UFO3 fonts. Still some rough edges but we've got it working well.

We've updated our SIL Font Development Notes to give details of how to use FontForge - the free/libre font design tool - to modify our fonts. silnrsi.github.io/silfontdev/en-…

We've now documented and shared our font production processes. Still a bit geeky (runs from terminal commands) but works oh so well. Hope to expand it with more details over time.

Want to build, modify, and redistribute our font projects? Here's a new guide to get you set up with our free/libre tools and workflow. You can also use the workflow for your own projects! silnrsi.github.io/silfontdev/
