My Mum was 16 when I was born, and my parents soon split. I lost all contact with my father. My Mum then remarried - and redivorced - two more times. By the time I turned 18 my Mum had been divorced three times. As a result of all this I began reading psychology books, age 13

Much upset stems from not understanding what wealth and wealth creation are. If I sharpen sticks into spears I have created wealth. I can use the spears, or barter or sell them. If you collect the sticks for me you have played a part. Maybe we split the profits - so we both…

Greedy and morally bankrupt to avoid contributing to the society that enabled him to acquire such wealth

After a few days in Dubai all the backward-looking kvetching over nonsense in western politics seems even more ridiculous. Meanwhile the growing powerhouses of the modern world - UAE, Singapore, China, etc - are getting sh*t done. “But it’s not fair!” never got nobody nowhere.

It’s not a head scratcher as to why people are voting for socialism - it’s housing. If houses are unaffordable then a person’s very existence and dignity is threatened. The majority of people don’t want a house as a way to get rich. They just want a decent house to live in and…

“If women are behind on a metric, it’s recorded as inequality. If men are behind, it’s recorded as parity. You read that correctly: The index is explicitly designed so that men cannot be seen as disadvantaged, no matter how far behind they fall.” [Link below.]

Marc doesn’t have a contract with his kids - contracts are freely entered into by all parties. Marc has an authoritarian rule & will punish his kids if they break it. This undermines their trust in their own judgements & incentivises them to lie to him & resent him.

I have a no alcohol household. I have a contract with my kids - they cannot drink alcohol at all. If you get caught, you lose privileges. Those privileges can include college, car, and other things I work to provide for them. Not because I am some anti-alcohol zealot, but…

Oh dear. "I know what's best for you, children."

Dear “15-18 yo founder”s sending me DMs, don’t. Go and hug your parents, fall in love, eat chocolate cereal for breakfast, read poetry. Nobody will give you back these years. And sure, do your homework and learn math and code if that feels fun. But stop building SaaS and…

Inviting teens to read The Rational Optimist is a great way to support their natural optimism and to inoculate them against Greta-miserabilism.

Kids thrive in environments built on optimism, not defeatism. At Alpha School, we teach growth mindset starting in Kindergarten—a parent favorite. By middle and high school, students read Matt Ridley’s The Rational Optimist as a counterweight to the pessimism that can pervade…

Journalists don’t actually understand much, Exhibit 73.

Jeff Bezos explained why being “famously unprofitable” was Amazon’s smartest move ever:

>use phonics teach 3yo to read “hot”, “cat”, “pig”, etc >3yo asks me to spell “food”, “rubble” and “Komodo dragon” >spell them even though they break all the phonic rules we’ve been using >he continues to feel good and enjoy learning to read

I just sent my 12 year old in to go get a dozen donuts while I waited in the car. “Mom they will wonder why I’m alone.” “What will I say when they ask?” And so on… Guys this helicopter society is not good for the kids. The big concern is not him doing something but in how…

Been double-screening. Watching Gladiator 2 solo AND pausing to ask ChatGPT about the movie, actors and historical accuracy (or not) of the plot. When I do this movies take twice as long AND are twice as rewarding. I learn so much! But double-screening is bad, they say.

Just taught 3yo “bird dog” exercise while cooking breakfast. He’s now demonstrating it to his Mum. Where’s the form I need to fill out to get another phys ed credit?

“STEM project”?!?! It’s a paper airplane. A fun one (we made it today). But why does the language of bureaucratic edu-speak have to seep into everything? Such tick-box jargon only dilutes the joy. Unfortunately even pre-schools are full of it.

Ooo, I know this one - is it because you’ve created massive value for other human beings? I suspect most millionaire celebrities who hate on wealth do so because deep down they feel guilty about being rich themselves. Billie, it’s ok to be wealthy. Enjoy it!

"if you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?" -Billie at the @WSJ Innovator awards tonight in New York!

Sadly this is a parenting fail. The kids and parents are obviously intelligent, but the parents have failed to teach their kids basic human psychology and how incentives work. These are VITAL conversations to have to protect your kids from a victimhood mentality.

Chinese woman swam eight hours in 1976 to leave communism behind. She arrives in America. Her sons go on to attend Cornell and MIT. The kids support Mamdani. The parents struggle to understand why. How is knowledge of the past this easily lost?

“Highest return on investment” may not be the ideal way of thinking about your 4yo’s activities. But Brazilian JuJitsu or gymnastics for core physical foundations, and reading early for earlier exposure to many, many ideas. But both must be voluntary, don’t push the kid.

OK, let’s put on our striver parent hats for a second. I have a four-year-old. I’m not neurotic about getting such a young kid involved in a bunch of different stuff, but what things have the highest return for early involvement? What should I be thinking about? Any specific…
