Thursday Sept 19 at @IpshitaZ 's invite, I gave a talk at Gyuri Buzsaki's Lab at NYU "Cinema as proto-affordance language — spatial syntax" and Ang Lee joined me. It was a wonderful step bridging the arts and sciences.

Half your brain cells are astrocytes, oscillating without spiking, while cortical neurons spike sparsely. So nearly 100% of cells are oscillating almost all the time, but only a minority of cells emit rare spikes. Maybe spikes are the tail and oscillations are the dog.

Yep it’s PCT: userinterfaces.aalto.fi/neuromechanics/ The learning would be through reorganisation: the formation of the perceptual function for the ‘shadow’, its reference value & connection to the abstract goal. Reorganisation involves random change but not explicit probability estimation.

A new study in Advanced Science reveals the brain uses two parallel networks to recognize familiar sounds. One network processes the sound itself, while a second, deeper network compares it to memory and flags any unexpected changes. dlvr.it/TPKf8V

It's remarkably hard to find examples of how recent AI *is substantively improving* peoples' lives. So much of the content is "this *could* be used to...", "this has the *potential to* support...." Yes, and. We need robustly measured direct evidence of what's *actually* helped.

Block criticizes my suggestion that large-scale dynamic patterns in nervous systems, such as oscillations, might be important in enabling consciousness. I'll do a separate thread on that (he does raise a relevant objection). Most relevant paper of mine: direct.mit.edu/jocn/article/3… 7/
