The piece by @RadioFreeTom is the best explainer of why the Biden administration is “holding their fire & keeping their powder dry” when faced with all those who want to “do something.” Brilliant & spot on by someone who understands the stakes. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
Many have been wondering how airstrikes in Afghanistan will be folded into the PPG (Presidential Policy Guidance) rules meant to apply outside areas of active hostilities. Looking like lots of flexibility will remain as to ISIS-K. Perhaps same will be true as to AQ.
Politico: President Joe Biden has given the Pentagon the “green light” to strike any targets affiliated with the Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan, ISIS-K, the group responsible for the attack, without seeking White House approval. politi.co/2Y72qVl
"Brother … It’s too cold to jihad.” Ian Fritz flew 99 combat missions in Air Force gunships, listening to the chatter of Taliban fighters below. And then, he writes, he finally heard what they were saying: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Please do not spend a second personally attacking @RepKinzinger for his sincere beliefs on #Afghanistan. This may seem unusual, but disagreements like this on POLICY is what it looked like before Trump. Let’s be civil and not confuse him with the America-hating insurrectionists.

Sorry @SecPompeo, but the problem with the Feb 2020 deal with the Taliban that you supported is not that the Taliban violated it but that it was done w/o Afghan government participation & asked so little of the Taliban in return for US military withdrawal. bit.ly/3CQxicn

I'm normally very careful to say situations are complex and to try to see the opposing view. I've looked and I can't find one for not taking as many refugees from Afghanistan as the allies can possibly pack onto planes and helicopters. How is this even a debate? Get them out.
Everyone making amateur assessments of Afghanistan should remember that these situations often look drastically different when in possession of classified intelligence. The situation is complex and is critical to NATO's posture with regards to foreign adversaries. Stay frosty.
My heart has broken. Like most vets, I left part of me in AFG. Later we’ll debate the failures of last 20 yrs, but today our mission is clear: hold the airport as long as possible and get ALL U.S. citizens and as many Afghan partners out as we can. We will debate the rest later
If you're a policy type who thinks now is a time to make clever jokes & jabs at the military, go fuck yourself. There is blame for this all up & down American society, and definitely including those who formed the nonsense and piecemeal policies for the last three administrations
