When I first started in linguistics, it took me about 2 years to ask a question in a departmental talk. The first Q (or rather comment) I ever posed was to recommend @BencieWoll's "echo phonology" to the speaker. Very proud to now engage with Bencie's proposal in my new paper.
Big sticking point for gestural theories of language origins: How could a primarily gestural protolanguage give rise to speech? One suggestion is the "echoic" route—the mouth echoes the hands. Interesting new take on this idea by Planer & @lareedling. link.springer.com/article/10.100…
Thank YOU @NickPalfreyman for all of your support and expertise in putting this together, and BIG thanks 🙏 to Debbie Kennewell for the Auslan abstract! @CoEDLang @ANUcass
Really chuffed because the special issue of APLV is now published (with signed abstracts!!!) Massive thanks to you amazing contributors @lareedling @k_saga130 @katie__mudd @hlutzenberger and especially APLV editor Shobha Satyanath for making this happen! islandscentre.wordpress.com/2020/08/21/spe…

Oh my goodness! I am so delighted! @ryanlepic was my sign language linguistics instructor at @lsa_2017 and he has been a mentor ever since, including generously reading my whole MA thesis and giving invaluable insights. I am *so* delighted for you, Ryan! 👏👏👏

his father left when he was 12, now he has a YT channel called “Dad, how do I?” to help kids who’re growing up without dads. teaching them basic tasks that you’d usually ask your dad for help on. this is the purest thing 😭
Q: Why study sociolinguistics? A: These people still exist
I thought I was doing well! Who’s this chuffing comedian? Anyway, I haven’t got time to chat - I must return to my ‘evidently difficult background.’ #Barmpot
Feeling like you’re not achieving enough in lockdown? Give yourself a break In today’s @TheSundayIndo
This is bullshit. As a commenter said, what about the 72% of students who wasted precious time on and likely experienced huge stress (esp given the current climate) over this “unanswerable question”?
Is this professor evil or a genius? Creating an unanswerable exam question and posting the "answer" on a cheating website seems needlessly devious, but then again, ~28% of students ended up cheating, so...? 🤔
So pleased to see this proposal to declare 13th April ‘Auslan Day’ in recognition of the fact that the Auslan Dictionary was published 31 years ago today! #Auslan #AuslanDay #signlanguages #Australia
Celebrating #Auslan Day on 13th April 2020 - Australian Sign Language (#Auslan) Dictionary was launched 31 years ago today, and it was not recognised as such until today. @deafaustralia @rejadam @AdamCSchembri youtu.be/BJVR7qg6hhc
