Thank you @ShaunLintern, for taking the time to listen to us and to write about Marnie’s story. 5½ years after Marnie was born avoidably dead, we are finally able to speak openly and share our experience. What followed was a lengthy and painful legal battle with the Trust, (1/6)
🚨 INVESTIGATION: Britain's maternity crisis has deeper roots, extending into the universities trusted to train the next generation of midwives. A majority are still promoting a normal birth ideology while women are more complex than ever: READ: thetimes.com/article/b4fe11…
We are trying to engage with the national maternity investigation, but it's so far from what @wesstreeting set out in June. Now that it's no longer co-produced with bereaved & harmed families, it absolutely feels like it's being done to us, not with us. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…
Victim blaming at its finest on @thetimes Facebook page to @ShaunLintern’s piece on Leeds. Families such as ours speaking the raw truth of their realities, but apparently we are allowing “other women to lose their good birth” and “harming others”. P.S. I fixed it for you.
Let’s be clear, the way that we were treated was not as a result of staffing numbers or funding. The labour ward was neither understaffed nor over stretched, according to the Coroner’s examination of both of these areas. 1/ thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/…
We spoke with @thetimes and @ShaunLintern who today publish a shocking piece showing how the c section rates in Leeds were the lowest nationally, whilst the stillbirth and neonatal death rates became the highest nationally. 1/ thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/…
In July we gave @wesstreeting our views on what the maternity taskforce could look like. This week we've been sent proposals that are pretty much the opposite of everything we said in July. Now we're invited to give feedback (again). Honestly what's the point?
NEW: Bereaved families' fears over plans for national maternity taskforce, as first details emerge for the group newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…
I fear this slip in phrasing from Baroness Merron betrays the government's actual feelings on compensation payouts for injuries and deaths caused by negligent and dangerous maternity care. No part of this is 'ridiculous' - it's a tragedy that shames the country.
On payouts: “This brings me to another area which is we pay out a ridiculous - sorry, I should be careful - of course, people should be compensated. But we’ve got to a system where we are paying out more in compensation than on services…that can’t be right & isn’t sustainable.”
🚨 Student midwives are being stopped from graduating and forced to extend training "to make up for deficits in theory and practice" the NMC has said. 67 separate concerns have been raised with the NMC about university courses in the past year: thetimes.com/article/24e9b3…
A multi-family letter went to @davidlammy in September. The @NewStatesman covered it. @MoJGovUK still hasn’t replied, they passed it to @DHSCgovuk , despite it being their remit. Families shouldn’t need media attention to be heard. #Stillbirth #coroner @hannahsbee @wesstreeting
In Sweden, the health service admits when a mistake has happened, compensation is given and people learn from it we're told. So again, it's not about a not fault compensation system, it's about finding out why NHS Trusts deny, defend & delay. @krishgm @vsmacdonald
Mr Hunt: NHS lawyers tell staff to not say anything or say the bare minimum when an incident has happened. Then goes on to say we thus need a no fault compensation system. Well, no. You look at why lawyers acting for the NHS deny, defend & delay. @krishgm channel4.com/news/a-culture…
Very sad to be told student midwives have received emails from universities telling them not to speak to me or other media about this story. Just to repeat - any student midwife can contact me and no one will know. I will protect your identity.
I'd really like to hear from more student midwives about what's going on during your training. Happy to be contacted via DM or at [email protected] - anonymity is not a problem. #maternity #maternitysafety
So many UHSussex midwife signatures on this petition in response to @ShaunLintern's normal birth investigation 😫 openletter.earth/an-open-letter…
If he did, it would be a betrayal of the promises made to harmed families that he would oversee the Maternity taskforce. This would make the reasoning behind the RR (even more) flawed. Unless of course, Act No 1 as PM would be to order a public inquiry. #PInow
Horrifying to see the reaction to this piece from those who say they want to improve maternity care. At Abigail's inquest we were told we weren't invited in (against guidelines) to avoid breaking the "oxytocin bubble". A priority I'd never have chosen over my daughter's safety.
Making friends! They can't even get the right newspaper. 🤣 Thanks for reposting @birth_better 👀
Thank you to @TimesRadio @Chloetilley for having me on this morning to talk about Marnie. thetimes.com/radio/show/202…
Bit tone deaf…. Don’t you think? Those doors are the last we went through before knowing Aubrey was dead…. And the last photo is (probably) the mortuary where he went. But, you know, let’s get excited it was used for TV. @SWBHnhs @Dudley_SWBCEO instagram.com/p/DQywQkQjQlH/…
How many babies have died during that time because of @nmcnews inaction? My Beatrice is one of them. This is why we need a statutory public inquiry - these people must account for their actions, in public, under oath, including questions asked by barristers representing victims.
It is a decade since the Morecambe Bay maternity report was published, exposing the deadly consequences of normal birth ideology. Since then the regulator responsible for midwifery education @nmcnews has allowed this dangerous ideology to continue being taught.
