Imagine a Pacific Language Week that focussed only on Samoan. Therein lies the problem with Chinese Language Week in NZ. The Chinese, diaspora and otherwise are not a monolith and it would be weird if they were.

Terrible news. The last speaker of the Beḷāra language (an underdescribed South Dravidian language presumed to be closely related to Tulu), Sidda Beḷāra, has passed away.

what is the black thing where the blue bird logo goes? A twisted old capacitor symbol? Open version of X11?

Just had a hilarious realization. Name a single Native American historical figure from before 1492.

is there a religious or cultural reason for why english words for “earth” (soil, dirt) seem to make it out as filthy? meanwhile it lacks that same connotation in other languages I know, and in Islam soil is not only pure but purifying

The Lewis & Short dictionary (1879) translates the interjection 'babae' or 'papae' as 'odds bodkins!' as its first choice! I can't get over how cute that is. How would you render 'papae' in English spoken in the year of our Lord 2023?

Just seen a newspaper article whose author interprets the 'lost-wax method' of casting bronze as meaning the method of casting bronze using wax has been lost 🤦‍♂️

... We aim to be understandable by 16 year olds. Sometimes Asian names can be confusing, so we have to be careful about using too many.

"Instead of asking for a Sumerian speaker, how about you learn Amorite?!" Yasmaḫ-Addû is back and this time he can't speak Amorite. ☹️ What could be the context of his request for a Sumerian scribe & why would his father then scold him for not knowing Amorite? Find out below!

Albrecht Dürer Meets. . . Mad Magazine!? I've never seen a Dürer Fortifications manual where the building edges line up so perfectly! Or one where the tower gets resized quite so hilariously. Coincidence? #FoldoutFriday This gorgeous copy once owned by Philip Hofer is @NYPLArt!

History museum folks, do you think "living history" as an interpretive tool is dying? I love museum theatre, but I think I'm losing faith in living history - especially the kind that depicts colonial/19th century.

Disappointed to hear motat's policy approach to masks has changed from "we'll provide you with a mask if you need one so you can public face, don't bring your own" to "we aren't legally required to do anything, if you choose to wear a mask, find your own". Not a great response 😕
