A few days ago, a friend oversaw me reading an imaging paper and asked: “I’ve always wondered how an fMRI works. Do you think I’d be able to understand even if I didn’t know much physics?”. Well, I decided to make a YouTube video answering that: youtube.com/watch?v=Hipq5S…

ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE PEOPLE in the history of brain mapping was Keith Worsley (1951-2009), seen in this video solving a cool puzzle in an ingenious way: 🔥 if you have a t statistic at every point on a 3D surface (like the cortex of the brain), how do we know if an…

Mental health can be viewed as energy landscapes. OCD has deep valleys where neural activity gets stuck. Schizophrenia has shallow valleys where neural activity runs freely. This is the dynamical systems theory.

Real and imagined images are processed using the same systems in the brain, yet most people can distinguish between the two. Now neuroscientists have identified two brain regions that keep imagined images separate from reality. go.nature.com/45kzPwj

The vast majority over discoveries are low hanging fruit when they are made. The key to scientific progress is progressively making more fruit low-hanging. One of the deep problems we have in science is that we reward the people who pick the fruit rather than the ones who lower…

A basic question whose answer seems to me to dictate what the near-term future of scientific discovery looks like: is there a lot of attention-bottlenecked low-hanging fruit, or have humans done a reasonably good job finding the easy stuff?
