Apple executives have floated the idea of combining hardware engineering and hardware technologies divisions as one combined group under Srouji in order to retain him. But that couldn’t happen until and if John Ternus becomes CEO. This would make Srouji the clear number 2.

So far at Apple, Srouji has transformed the silicon inside of iPhones and iPads, moving in-house, and also successfully switched the Mac from Intel to Apple Silicon. Most recently, he kicked off the holy grail transition of launching a modem to replace Qualcomm.

Strange hire for a number of reasons but it’s hard to argue the Apple job is a bad one. Anything is an improvement at this point so the bar is as low as it comes. Easy layup on the resume.
