Every time I get evicted and starve penniless for four days, I reflect upon the glory days when editors sent me to write restaurant reviews. The owner and chef would fill the table with every dish on the menu. To know opulence and 1,000 days of penniless starvation is uncommon.

If I ever get murdered, it won't be because of my politics. I'm a libertarian socialist living in a tropical utopia, an ethereal paradise with illimitable civil liberties and the most majestic ocean views on Earth. I'll be murdered for using real names in an essay or memoir.
A typical day in my mid-twenties as a freelance writer in Cabo: Enjoy an exorbitant tourist activity for free in order to write a magazine piece. Get paid 40¢ per word. Swim at a private beach. Wine and dine for free at a lavish beachfront restaurant to write a restaurant review.
"I'll give you the whole secret to short story writing. Here it is. Rule 1: Write stories that please yourself. There is no Rule 2." ―O. Henry (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910)
Life is good in ethereal paradise. Best beach is an empty beach. The world is yours.
Best mansion I've ever known. I've slept in more humongous and historical mansions, but the beachfront seclusion makes it exceptional. Totally isolated. Drove an hour on secret dirt roads to get here. Perfect oasis for writing, editing, reading, swimming, and debaucheries. 📚🏖️🏝️
You, too, can look as pallid and exhausted as me. All you need to do is never sleep. Read 300,000 words every day. Only leave your home once or twice per week—except for strolls to the pool or swimming at your private beach—and never for more than a couple of hours.

Today is my birthday. I've enjoyed tremendous successes and endured ineffable struggles. I went pro as a writer at age 16, writing essays for dozens of my dormmates. I made $500 in cash nightly. I also starved 1,000 days penniless and survived this millennium without healthcare.
Thursday is my birthday. Sometimes, I don't drink beer for four days. I might indulge in marijuana. Maybe one hit per night. Then I guzzle 20 beers and stay up all night. This is my new routine. I used to drink 20 beers nightly for 20 years. Sober people are the worst writers.
Very weird (but I mean that in a good way!) story!

One of the best-kept secrets is how lucrative writing is in Cabo San Lucas. Travel writing is tedious—but if you write gonzo pieces, it's sort of fun. You earn 30¢ per word, stockpile vouchers, enjoy exorbitant tourist activities for free, and dine at lavish restaurants for free.
