Sort of confirms my theory that Lynch is spiritually connected to Cronenberg, because these scenes are edited almost exactly like the action in A History of Violence, especially the quick staccato close ups.
Institutions responsible for enforcing standards belatedly realising that failing to enforce standards for fashionable antinomian reasons negates their whole institutional mission.
I take Wikipedia for granted. But reading this interview with @jimmy_wales reminded me what a remarkable and important creation it is. A true pillar of civilization. And costs only $200 million a year. Requires our support. I’m finally donating. Gift link: nytimes.com/2025/10/18/mag…
Harassment campaigns like the ‘professor watch list’ are core to Turning Point’s brand and fundraising. I would even bet this student/TPUSA chapter specifically targeted a trans professor. All of this was common knowledge when Ezra praised them.

A few notes on Northwestern's deal with the Trump admin, beyond the headline of extorting $75m in exchange for reneging on the deal that led to the end of the encampments 🧵 tldr: The deal is a big step backward, in a few respects the worst one so far
there’s actually a woke and leftist way to cite God that I teach all my students and his name is Walter Benjamin
latest article is on the extremely disturbing warrantless, illegal spying made possible by "Flock Safety," a policing surveillance startup that gives local cops (and even some corporations) an AI-enabled camera network—so that they can follow individual drivers all around a city.
Flock’s vast license-plate camera network tracks drivers nationwide, sharing data with police. Critics call it invasive, insecure, and unconstitutional—fueling a growing grassroots push to ban or restrict the system’s reach. truthout.org/articles/a-vas…

Lmao so the mom of the Turning Points USA kid who wrote the bad essay is crashing out over how all of Twitter is dunking on her daughter, and of course it turns out the mom is a GOP politician (makes you wonder if the whole thing was deliberately staged).
You didn’t read the instructions. Opinion essay
unbelievably grim that you can ignore the prompt of an assignment to go on a barely coherent screed where you call your professor a "demon," then when your professor gives you undeservedly thoughtful feedback and a bad grade you can run to the media and get her placed on leave
funny. i’m writing up something on the cultural turn that basically argues this. no new ideas for real
A very important point from @gabrielwinant on historians' abuse of the term "contingency" in the past 30-40 years.
Halfway through this, the most exciting work on LLMs I've read yet, part of a larger defense of semiotics I'm also deeply invested in. Psychoanalysis came back in recent years--as Marxists turn to periodizing capitalism through regimes of accumulation, is it structuralism's turn?
imo this is too optimistic. If the whole thing was intentionally bombed, TPUSA wouldn't have published the essay, instructions, & feedback in full. The essay reads like a quintessential Dumb Student Essay, & everyone involved in publishing it was too illiterate to recognize that.
She 1000% wrote this wanting to be failed so she could run to TPUSA and have them defend her on the internet. That is TPUSA's only purpose. To harass and terrorize school faculty until they quit. Their goal is to destroy education.
