25 years ago, I struggled with whether to do mathematics or music as a profession. Then one of my University teachers mentioned off-hand that he'd had a similar struggle, and chose as profession what would be harder to make a hobby. Now he's written a book only he could write.

Excited to announce a new side project, a power user terminal UI for your personal finances: moneyflow.dev For years I've used personal finance tools like Mint and now Monarch. The data cleaning can be slow and tedious, so I made this to speed that up!

I recently opened a private seminar at the Bank of England with “The most likely reason for me to be in this building is to exchange demonetized pounds while being an unbanked foreign national. Instead I am summoned to speak as a systems engineer about systemic risk.”

current big gap in AI capabilities: knot theory. recognizing knot types, even in"standard presentation" (from knot tables) is very difficult, even for the best models right now.

I just woke up and the first thought I had, even before kissing my wife, even before realizing I needed to go the bathroom so badly, was “I have to re-read that old survey by Gabaix on power laws in economics. It was good”. Anyway, link below. Open access. But life is really…

“Everyone knows” what an autoencoder is… but there's an important complementary picture missing from most introductory material. In short: we emphasize how autoencoders are implemented—but not always what they represent (and some of the implications of that representation).🧵

I can't* fathom why the top picture, and not the bottom picture, is the standard diagram for an autoencoder. The whole idea of an autoencoder is that you complete a round trip and seek cycle consistency—why lay out the network linearly?

This reminds me of the test for engineer vs non-engineer: get them to pronounce "coax" (currently rereading 'What is applied category theory?' 1809.05923 , linked tweet is footnote 8)

Last night, I was skimming through a math paper and got to the word "counts." Confused, I kept staring at the word. “Whoa. What is an unt? Is it like a unit? And what does it mean to take its dual?” So I read the sentence a second time. This is not good.
