Celery pine possesses one of the strongest native timbers. Pākehā used Celery pine in houses, decks, bridges, and railways. Māori found a myriad of uses for the plant, crafting it into waka, masts, paddles, bowls, clubs, spears and walking sticks.

Eucalyptus macrocarpa. I have been dying to see one of these in person and I finally got the chance at @TheHuntington this past week. Those flamboyant flowers emerge from a strange capsule-like bud whose tip pops off like a cap. So cool! 😍
The brilliant white flowers of rengarenga (Arthropodium cirratum). Māori translocated rengarenga across the country and grew it in gardens around pa sites and marae. The plant has an edible root which was relied upon when other food was scarce.
Kōwhai is an important medicinal plant in Rongoā - traditional Māori healing. The bark is soaked in water and used to treat skin conditions, dandruff and various aches and pains. The bark itself is used to dress wounds, sprains and broken bones.
Koromiko is one of the most important medicinal plants in the New Zealand flora. During the world wars, parcels of dried koromiko leaves were sent to soldiers as a treatment for diarrhoea

This pink flowered variety of mānuka (Leptospermum scoparium var. incanum) is unique to the far north of New Zealand. Its seed capsules typically only open after the plant has died or has been in contact with fire.
