I love giving students brain breaks but honestly never really thought much about differentiating them. This discusses several different types of brain breaks and why and when to offer them. Love this and can’t wait to try some next week. edutopia.org/article/incorp… via @edutopia

Perception shift 🧐 #education #educators #schools #students #appliededucationalneuroscience #perception #fear #punish #behaviors
😔 Many #students feel stigmatized and excluded when they are seated at the back of the room with a paraprofessional. Wouldn't you? #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Educators #UDL #TeacherTwitter
💥 Intervention is systematically moving a #student to proficiency on a critical skill using a research-based practice. (#Homework support doesn't count.) #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Educators #UDL #TeacherTwitter
🌟 Just like the ramps around us that help everyone, the more universal design for learning we put into place in our #classrooms, the fewer special #accommodation and modifications we need to add later. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL
💡 Until we give #students multiple means of showing what they understand/can do, we are not implementing mastery-based grading (SBG). It's still performance on a task, albeit reported on standards. Multiple means of expression is how we take it to the next level. #LeadInclusion
🎯 If a #student is having trouble with an assignment, the goal isn't to get through the assignment. The goal is to improve the skill that is giving them difficulty with the assignment. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #TeacherTwitter
❌ The #student who isn't a "good test taker" doesn't have flawed learning. Assessing students in only one way is the flaw. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #SBLchat #TG2Chat #TeacherTwitter
🚫 Not giving #students options for how they show their #learning introduces significant barriers to many. HOW you show your learning isn't the same as WHAT you learned. Giving only one way compromises the validity of our assessment. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL
This is some helpful and advise from @leeannjung: "Always connect with a child and validate their emotion before thinking about any kind of consequence or correction." ascd.org/el/articles/co… #elmagchat
A5 Keep calm, handle it privately, connect by asking the student to tell you what happened, validate the emotion, once calm, find a solution. Validation and not shaming help move the energy back to the prefrontal cortex. Until there, nothing will be accomplished. #ELMagChat
💥 #Homework support ≠ intervention. Instead of asking special #education #teachers to assist with assignments and #homework, let's ask them to support SKILLS and deep UNDERSTANDING. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #UDL #TeacherTwitter
✳️ The primary purpose of classroom #assessment is to inform our #instruction, not to determine a grade. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #SBLchat #TG2Chat #ATAssessment
👥 Students who have #IEPs are not "special education students." They are simply students. They belong to every educator they have. Receiving a service shouldn't impose an identity. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL
Many of our students have difficulty taking responsibility and showing remorse after an incident, contributing to a repeat of the behavior. Check out my new article on @ASCD to learn ways to support accurate perspective-taking. ascd.org/el/articles/a-… via @ASCD
❌ Behavior charts can end up harming vulnerable learners. They're more about public shaming than fostering self-regulation. - Jung and Smith #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Educators #UDL #TeacherTwitter
