@melselfe

This! Do uni’s want their PhD graduates (usually scrabbling for any job to stabilise finances after completion) to have the best chance of turning their PhD research into top quality articles, framed by the latest literature? If so, do this.

There’s one easy thing that universities could do to make their PhD graduates more successful and employable. Just give them online library access rights for a few years/life. It seems like such an easy win. There’s probably a tech reason why it would be unmanageable but…

Perhaps it's time for us academics to do what we do best... filibuster those research deadlines! "So sorry for the late reply, I've been rushed off my feet, can we move the draft to end April? I'll have a teaching-free week" etc etc

Dr Melanie Selfe сделал(а) репост

This sets a worrying precedent, with the potential of published research being rushed through so that it can be fed into the LLMs in time. Which means lower research quality AND AI companies shaping the quality of published research AND rushed research being used to train LLMs..

Dr Melanie Selfe сделал(а) репост

UPDATE: yesterday @routledgebooks @tandfonline told all staff that it's extra important to meet 2024 targets as they have promised the LLM companies a quota of books for them to digest to train their AIs. So if your editor is pushing you to meet that deadline, this is why!

Just found out that Taylor & Francis has sold access to all @routledgebooks data to Microsoft to train their AI. This includes my publications. I get no payment for using my research labour, never mind the bigger problems of this energy-intensive extractivism...

"After making her mark as a film journalist in Britain and a publicity and film sales manager in the Netherlands, she found fame as the manager of art house cinemas, notably the Academy in London, playing a huge part in spreading the appreciation of film as art in the 1930s."

Delighted to say that I have written two new profiles of silent era women for the @WFPProject. First is a major yet overlooked figure, Elsie Cohen - pioneering film journalist and manager of legendary art house cinema The Academy wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/elsie-…

As we share the dates for Cinema Rediscovered 2025 (Wed 23 - Sun 27 July), look back at this summer c/o filmmaker @arthurcauty which captures what the festival is all about – bringing people together to celebrate the rediscovery and revival of great films on the big screen.

Lauren Bacall would have turned 100 today. In 1946, she was immortalized in the WB cartoon, Bacall to Arms. They don't make cartoons like this anymore. 😂

If you run any sort of infrastructure on Linux, even if not publicly known, please update ASAP. Any server with SSH exposed publicly is extremely vulnerable.

This tool asks ‘Where do you stand?’ Under FPTP, the only question that really matters is ‘Where do you live?’ Please remember to Vote Local and Vote Tactical. And if you’d like a system where voting Conscience isn’t a dangerous moral vanity, then fight for electoral reform.

Confused about what the parties are promising? Try WhoGetsMyVote.org to discover where parties stand on key issues and which parties best fit your own views. #WhoGetsMyVote is a free, non-partisan online tool developed by researchers who think that YOUR views matter.

And now slipped in casually by BBC broadcaster @amolrajan on @BBCr4today like it’s a normal term in the context of a Westminster election. If ‘supermajority’ is the new Tory boo-word for how the inherent unfairness of FPTP might no longer serve the Tories, let’s talk about that!

*PLEASE* can broadcasters not talk about 'super majority' without first pointing out that it means nothing in UK and then asking their guest why the Conservatives are pushing the term

This. It’s absolutely hideous.

I’m curious: when did “casted” start to get so much usage, when there is and has been a perfectly good word—“cast”—to do its work, across tense? I’ve noticed it a lot the last coupla years. Did somebody say it on TV or TikTok or something?

I love everything about this. Including, or maybe especially, that he takes a nice long pause for sincere, deep thought.

I’m just going to spend the evening watching successive versions of the Scottish political news across different channels, aren’t I?

Oo! This is very useful!

My latest article in @ASR_Journal: “The Culture of Censorship.” It offers a rare window into how China’s state censorship shapes global film production. I developed a micro-sociological model of censorship and coined the term "complicit creativity." A🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…
