Lord, deliver me from required fields that are not applicable.
Knowing WHEN and WHERE to look things up—and how to interpret what the source tells you—is part of what makes a good editor.
Saying goodbye to my kids as they head out to school. "I love you," I say out loud. "I hope you don't get shot," I say in my head.
I was glad to see this update from @APStylebook. It was incarceration, not internment. They were U.S. citizens imprisoned for no crime.
Among the welcome updates announced last week by @APStylebook, its guidance calling for “incarceration” over “internment” merits wider attention. For those who have advocated on this matter, it’s a game changer. Thank you again, @AP friends. cc: @aaja @AAAStudies @DenshoProject

Hey @NPR, I love hearing @ayesharascoe in leading host & reporter roles on the air! More voices of people of color, please—supported and paid well.
Like vs Such as: Someone in the audience said “‘such as’ sounds stilted.” @meperl (with enthusiasm) “That’s a nice way of saying ‘this rule should dieeeeeeee’.” #ACES2022CritThinking #ACESEmerge
Moved to at last see this new #APStylebook addition on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. #ACESEmerge #ACES2022
Thrilled that there’s a whole new #APStylebook chapter on Inclusive Storytelling & Language. “It is not a ‘topic’ to be explored here and there. [It] should be part of everyday conversations, decision-making and coverage.” #ACESEmerge #ACES2022
The AP Stylebook eds promise “a lot of meaty updates” in the new changes about to be revealed. A nerdy frisson goes through the room. 🤓 #ACESEMERGE #ACES2022
When you’re barreling through a busy hotel lobby toward the coffeeshop, and you randomly pick up one word of a conversation as you pass, and that word is “Scrabble,” and you know you’re among your people. #ACESEmerge #ACES2022
And if you haven’t already read this amazing thread that Lawson started, just do yourself a favor and read it—but not in public unless you enjoy cry-laughing among strangers. #ACESEmerge thebloggess.com/2015/11/02/and…
“You guys are what make writers the best possible us.” —Jenny Lawson, author, creator of the Bloggess (speaking to a room of editors ❤️) #ACESEmerge #ACES2022
#ACESEMERGE folks: all ppl should use a microphone when asking questions. It’s not up to the person speaking whether they need a mic—it’s up to those trying to hear. You don’t know who has hearing challenges; you don’t get to decide whether others can hear you. #Accessibility
Just used the word “stalking” in a joking way & immediately regretted it. Stalking is real & traumatic; casual use minimizes that. Even if you spend a LOT of time focused on #ConsciousLanguage, old habits & enculturation are there. Hope I’m always working to do better. #ACES2022
This came up in my memories today, from my first ACES conference. Still true and always will be! #ACESEmerge #ACES2022
TIL about myself: I could listen to people talk about dictionaries ALL DAY. That's normal, right? #ACES2016
“I used to do the twerk test, but that’s getting old.” —@EditorMark, ruthlessly taken out of context 😁 #ACESEMERGE #ACES2022
