It’s good the mainstream press is finally investigating the kindergarten to psychiatrist to drugged-out child pipeline. 23 percent of 17 year-old boys have an ADHD diagnosis. It’s much worse for the kids they interviewed.
A 3-year-old was put on ADHD meds for acting up in daycare. That was the first of six different psychiatric drugs. How a childhood of overmedication begins. on.wsj.com/43FA17T
its crazy how in my own lifetime "education can be done better" went from almost purely left wing to almost purely right wing the default left wing stance is now very confusing. In aggregate its like "Teachers matter but don't evaluate them or anyone else for that matter"
One of my more right wing positions is that a classical education on traditional subjects with high expectations for students was very much a good thing and that we should find ways to get our educational system back to it.
Came across this summary that pulls together some of the recent findings on the links between commonplace (including ostensibly "harmless") pathogens and long-term harm to human health. The war on infectious diseases is far from over!
If you insert enough socialism in capitalism but keep calling it capitalism, people get fed up with the problems socialism causes but blame capitalism and then turn socialist.
Peter Thiel: If you graduated in 1970 with no student debt, compare that to the millennial experience: too many people go to college, they don’t learn anything, and they end up with incredibly burdensome debt. Student debt is a version of this generational conflict that I’ve…
This is an interesting counterfactual, mostly about land reform Taiwan would likely be in even worse shape For further reading see: marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolu…
My long held theory is that had the KMT won the civil war, present day China would be on roughly the same developmental level as India.
In 1810, humble nails were 1/250 of US GDP, about the same as computers today.
As a corollary to this, if you can’t do PLG, your market is too small to raise anyway
We've had VCs strongly push enterprise in the past, to the point of even asking us "Why even do PLG?" Of course you need enterprise ACV's to do big revenue But, if you don't invest 80% of your energy into PLG, losing that top of funnel will 100% kill your business
Nashville update since adding squad trucks to replace large apparatus use. Turns out fire departments insisting on larger trucks to be Swiss Army knives for every conceivable use was backwards. We need small Swiss Army knives like these, with specialized fire fighting apparatus…
It’s just…. so beautiful. If I was in Nashville I would be mapping out small infill parcels that might obtain variances due to these new capabilities. -50% less large apparatus use, extending lifespan of v expensive equipment. -faster urban responses for > life safety -$$…
Eyeglasses aren’t opioids. There’s no reason we should need to see an optometrist to buy glasses. You don’t in the rest of the world, and you didn’t in the US either until optometrists lobbied aggressively under the banner of “public safety.” For decades, opticians, trained with…
My next pet project will be to liberalize state eyeglass prescription laws because getting an exam every year is a pain in the butt and I didn't realize most other states have longer durations.
"software that allows the student to do the assignment and nothing else"
My other more recent hypothesis is that the drugging of America— from Ozempic to all the dulling substances that millions of people take— generally make people less risk-tolerant. There haven’t been enough studies on GLP-1s and the broader impact they have on compulsive or…
Chinese smart driving systems from Huawei, BYD, Xiaomi, Li Auto, etc. all performed poorly compared to Tesla on a Chinese TV program testing cars in realistic scenarios on real roads and highways. This was striking for a number of reasons: 1. Chinese ADAS is behind. Tesla was…
NEWS: Chinese media tested ADAS in various scenarios, including highways & night driving. @Tesla’s vision-based system outperformed emerging Chinese brands like Huawei & Xiaomi, as well as traditional automakers. Even with LiDAR, competitors’ ADAS performance lags behind Tesla.…
Thinking about this observation from @tylercowen again:
Yes. Writing is not a second thing that happens after thinking. The act of writing is an act of thinking. Writing *is* thinking. Students, academics, and anyone else who outsources their writing to LLMs will find their screens full of words and their minds emptied of thought.
much suffering is caused by people turning a "reduce variance" knob without realizing it controls the positive variance too
A stunning view of the Panama Canal, 1881. Imagine living in the 1870s and hearing about this daring bit of engineering for the first time.
The move higher in long-term yields around the globe is pointing to the elephant in the room. No politician wants to be the one to cut spending, despite rising deficits. Japan is simply foreshadowing what could be next for many countries around the world, including the US.
We should end legacy admissions. This isn’t a controversial view.
Marc is right: a rural honor-roll student faces long odds when roughly half of Ivy seats go to international students or diversity admits. BUT - he left out that 1/4th of the seats are still held for legacies, big-donor families, and varsity recruits. Here's how much being…
Quitting programming as a career right now because of LLMs would be like quitting carpentry as a career thanks to the invention of the table saw.
