THREAD. Ok, folks. Sit back & strap in. Let's take a ride through history as we explore the US position on Taiwan's status, shall we? (Note: as inspiring as I may find @pptsapper's work, I've yet to have lunch, so this history will be entirely sober. Please accept my apologies.)
The FT would do well to consider that Japan is a democracy and that Takaichi owes this honesty to the electorate.
FT editorial board: Japan, you know China's crazy, so why unnecessarily say something that you know will get a reaction?
A big thanks to the @realDonaldTrump Adm for making National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (#NASAMS) available to #Taiwan. This will significantly enhance our air defense capabilities to deter aggression & maintain peace across the strait. #PeaceThroughStrength
We’ll distribute “In Case of Crisis: #Taiwan’s National Public Safety Guide” to every household. At a time when the #PRC is escalating its threat & coercion, resilience is the key, & we’re preparing for it. adma.mnd.gov.tw/files/web/191/…
“A productive relationship is possible,” @ShayKhatiri and I argue for @thedispatch. “A transformational relationship is not.”

People talk as if going through a Nazi phase when you're younger is just normal. IT IS NOT NORMAL TO BE A NAZI AT ANY AGE! When I was younger, I was not surrounded by Hitler-loving peers. AND I GREW UP IN IRAN!
This is a median response, so will use it as an example but not aimed at this comment. Would also suggest people go and listen to @grahamformaine on @PodSaveAmerica. I have my suspicions that several of you have not. Fair to argue that Platner has more to do to assuage concerns…
I cannot wait for the moment a Dem candidate is revealed to have a Robert E. Lee back tattoo. It’s going to be amazing.
I met many folks in my Yale Law class who were worried about their confirmation hearings at the age of 22. We could have a governing class of those who started preparing as kids, or we could make room for Americans who have led imperfect lives & whose lived experience pushes…
Only? 🙄
I couldn't have been happier last night to remove my yellow flag pin that I've wearing for 2 years. I'm replacing it with an American flag pin. It was only through the power and force of will of the President of the United States that 20 people returned to their families 🇺🇸

@IIPS_org Senior Director @mike_mazza on the Philippines' role in global approaches to Taiwan. “[Countries] have embraced an indirect approach to deterring Beijing. The Philippines is emerging as the center of gravity for these efforts.” More on @Diplomat_APAC 📖:…
Taiwan is not Trump’s (or America’s) to hand over.
As I’ve been warning, contours of a grand strategic bargain emerge in US-China negotiations: Trump gets a trade deal. Xi gets downgraded US commitment to Taiwan, i.e. Trump “opposes” island’s independence. It’s a slippery slope to handing over Taiwan. wsj.com/world/china/tr…
@IIPS_org Senior Director @mike_mazza spoke on the recognitions of Palestine's statehood at the UNGA, arguing that Taiwan has a better case for statehood, and that politicians are pursuing "inflated ambition[s] to bring peace to the Middle East." More📚: ow.ly/QPB750X2t3K
By any measure, the case for Taiwan statehood is far more compelling than that for Palestinian statehood.
I write with @mike_mazza of blessed memory about the hypocrisy of recognizing Palestine while refusing to meet with Taiwanese leaders, an actual state, unlike Palestine, and a good one at that. thehill.com/opinion/intern…
