Shirley Verrett (1931-2010) was an American operatic mezzo-soprano, who achieved international recognition. Zenobia Powell Perry (1908-2004) was an American composer, professor, and civil rights activist. In 2003, she was awarded the Elizabeth Mathias Award from Mu Phi Epsilon.
