Another excellent legal mind joins Government. @sarahsackman is a new MP, superb lawyer, and someone who has gone into politics for the right reasons. After years of Govt dismissing lawyers’ expertise, this looks like a Govt that will value good lawyers doing good lawyering.

Very pleased to see Matrix colleague Richard Hermer KC appointed Attorney General. A superb lawyer who will bring experience, judgement and legal acumen to the role. A great start for lawyers and the rule of law, from the new Prime Minister.

Congratulations to Richard Hermer KC who has been appointed as Attorney General with immediate effect ow.ly/zyFr50Sw8eK @attorneygeneral

Was I the only one who was surprised to hear the Health Secretary say on @BBCr4today that the entire NHS annual budget for dental care in England is about £3bn? That’s about £55 per person per year. It doesn’t seem like a lot.

Thousands of innocent civilians have already been killed in Israel and Gaza. With the humanitarian crisis set to deteriorate even further, I’m calling for a ceasefire.

The officer who shot Chris Kaba has been charged with murder.

⚖️The CPS has authorised a murder charge following death of Chris Kaba. It is important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

UK Govt does seem to be out of sync with others on its wishes legal moves against encrypted communications. Even more worrying is the lack of appetite to take on this issue by the UK political parties not currently in Govt: daringfireball.net/2023/08/kouvak…

This, from @mryderkc about his client, Alvin Black, and Andrew Malkinson who we spoke to this week is important and we still hope to hear from the CCRC @BBCr4today

The Criminal Cases Review Commission needs to be less hesitant in sending possible miscarriages of justice to the Court of Appeal, says barrister Matthew Ryder KC. He cites the story of his client Alvin Black, who died in prison #R4Today bbc.in/3YeJsad

But the main reason I went on was because I think often about my client Alvin Black. If Alvin was still alive he’d have urged me to take the opportunity to say publicly ‘Alvin Black was an innocent man’. So I’m glad I at least got to do that for him today.

I’m grateful I got to talk on @BBCr4today about the need to implement existing Parliamentary Committee recommendations about CCRC reform that can and should already have been implemented. It’d be great to hear shadow Justice Secretary @SteveReedMP commit to doing so.

Thanks to everyone who listened in to the discussion about the CCRC on @BBCr4today this morning.

About to go on BBC @BBCr4today to discuss the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
