Rules trade creativity for predictability.

I can't claim that I remember that sentence (ok 2). But that is a book is a treasure and one of very few books I've read multiple times.

“I am at the moment writing a lengthy indictment against our century. When my brain begins to reel from my literary labors, I make an occasional cheese dip.” ― John Kennedy Toole, A Confederacy of Dunces (Ok, it's two sentences, but I smile every time I think of it.)

Generalizing this: excessively optimizing a complex system on a dimension causes its new pathologies.

A recurring theme of these is the metrics we choose to pursue will often predict (and in some cases, fairly directly cause) the pathologies of our programs.

The commodification and automation of output will increase the premium on novelty, judgement and nuance.

Social science research is sifting through piles of garbage to find bits of gold - good research ideas. If you sift through garbage your classmates are also sifting, you won't find any gold. If you sift un-sifted garbage, you still probably won't, but you have a nonzero chance

It is insane that 151 Democrats voted no on this. Tons of forest fires have happened because the NEPA review for the forest management plan to stop the fires took too long!!!

Look what just passed the House and is now going to the Senate.

Anyone who thinks AI won't be disruptive because it won't do literally everything anyone said it might is not paying attention to the ways LLMs have already made inroads into intern-level work. Is it top quality? No. But things don't have to be legendary to save time & money.

Thank you Tavis. I did not retweet this but I have made incorrect and boosted incorrect analysis in the past. This is a good reminder that the vocabulary of authority is not authority.

I’m not saying E2E/advanced integration etc tests are not valuable. Just that in my case: they turned out to be less valuable than I thought hey would be. What turned out to be more valuable: great monitoring & alerting systems. In the end, prod being healthy is what matters.
