Reminding myself that someone saying something dumb on the Internet isn't significant and shouldn't consume any of my emotional or intellectual energy.
NEW: Is the internet changing our personalities for the worse? Conscientiousness and extroversion are down, neuroticism up, with young adults leading the charge. This is a really consequential shift, and there’s a lot going on here, so let’s get into the weeds 🧵
A silver lining in the UVA presidential debacle. Paul Mahoney is an excellent choice nytimes.com/2025/08/04/us/… via @nytimes
I now have a cover design for my forthcoming book from Oxford UP. It may see the light of day yet...

Ever heard the phrase "from status to contract"? In a recent issue of Droit&Philosophie that I co-edited, I am taking a fresh look at Henry Sumner Maine's famous formula and propose to revisit it entirely, arguing that:
Looks like inflation is back on the menu!
A thesis: The concerns of young people tend to dominate culture and the concerns of old people tend to dominate politics.
A strong Julio-Claudian vibe...
I think that it's safe to say that the Presidential pardon power has jumped the shark.
In a survey of 477,000 Americans, here's the share who identified as non-religious by level of education. The most likely to be nones? Those who did not finish high school - 32% The least likely? Those with a masters degree - 20%.
The finding that young women are becoming a lot more liberal while young men are becoming a lot more conservative DOES NOT REPLICATE in the Cooperative Election Study. In fact, the two lines have run in almost perfect parallel for the last 15 years.
There is a certain kind of intellectual influence that is marked by the use of one's name to get donors angry enough to open their wallets. Well done @mattyglesias.
This one's for you, @mattyglesias Why readers should disregard such smug, callous commentary. currentaffairs.org/news/the-opini…
In 1972, 90% of all Americans claimed a Christian affiliation. In 2022, it was 64%. 73% of Americans were white Christians. Now, it's 47% 16% were non-white Christians. Now, it's 17%. All the drop in Christianity is a decline in white Christianity.
Every time I see one of his tweets like this, I remember that my department thought about asking him to give a speech, but when we saw his fee and $$ add-ons for anything else, we moved on.
The world’s richest 1% have more wealth than the bottom 95% put together, according to @Oxfam. There is no moral justification for this extraordinary level of inequality. It's distorting politics, rigging our markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of people.
The partisan brain rot is deep among some journalists. Also, Dems: Just stop defending the Hunter Biden pardon. Stop. Surely you want some shreds of credibility when you pound the podium in outrage about Trump.
Esquire wrote an entire piece saying that people should “ shut the fuck up” about Hunter Biden’s pardon claiming that George H.W. Bush pardoned his son Neil. The entire story has now been corrected to note this is not a thing that happened. “ Esquire regrets the error.”
I love Korea. I spent 2 years living there as an LDS missionary in the 1990s. Watching Koreans stop Yoon's attempted coup d'etat cold is marvelous. 한국 만세!
A word to progressives: Defending the Hunter Biden pardon makes it difficult to take your railing against corruption and undermining the rule of law seriously. And it should. The problem is that there will be plenty to rail about in the next 4 years. Keep your powder dry.
We've gone from a world where the GOP put Ted Olson into the highest legal positions in the land to one where it puts forward Matt Gaetz. RIP Ted Olson and God help us.
The answer is obviously yes
Should I bring a live chicken to Contracts class for discussion of the Frigaliment case?
